Just out of curiosity, what kind of video was playing when the iMac went dead? What model iMac?

My elderly friend called me to say that her iMac shut down while watching a movie.

...using Flash.

The old MacBooks I maintain for friends/family sound like jet engines when playing Flash. Awful really. My hack Mac 64bit Atom NVIDIA ION doesn't complain nearly as much. I'd still rather have the native video stream than the Flash wrapper of course. Unfortunately, Amazon Prime doesn't offer that option.
