Why does "fridge" have a "d" if "refrigerator" doesn't?

Most likely because the proper pronunciation of a word spelled "frige" would be ambiguous, but the proper pronunciation of "fridge" is pretty clear -- it would follow the pattern of the words ridge and bridge.

Both are pronounced the same, but one is something you get in your neck and the other is a small stream.

I think that's a regional thing. Where I grew up, people pronounced "creek" as "crick". Where I live now, we say "creek". I'm in favor of going with pronunciations that most closely match spelling, however difficult that may be in the mess that is English.

Ridgid (tools) is spelled with a "d". So I'm going with fridge Smile

Well, I can see from the poll results that this is going to be an uphill battle.
