Too close for comfort - Lemon Drop - 04-23-2012 Secret service scandal has now spread to the hotel where the President stayed, where one agent is reported to have brought a prostitute five days before Obama arrived. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/ The tone of this WaPo article that I read this morning bugged me a little. Kind of "boys will be boys" and "they couldn't help themselves, poor things" at the mercy of the beautiful young ladies of Cartagena. These weren't a bunch of guys at the wallpaper sales convention or college boys on spring break. Jeez. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/cartagenas-night-life-spelled-trouble-for-secret-service/2012/04/22/gIQAUMWpaT_story.html?tid=pm_pop Re: Too close for comfort - cbelt3 - 04-23-2012 The service these men hired out for is legal in the 'tolerance area' of Cartagena. So technically they did not break any laws. However they did break the #1 unwritten law of TDY. "Don't do something that will make your CO look bad." I'm sure some of the kids would probably smoke dope if the prez visits Amsterdam. Re: Too close for comfort - Lemon Drop - 04-23-2012 It's a whole lot worse than making the boss look bad, it's a major potential breach involving the President's personal security. At least one of the guys had the president's schedule in his room, they all have cell phones and laptops, and I really doubt any of these ladies had security clearance to view that info. Getting loudly drunk every night is part of the problem too, not just the prostitutes in the hotel rooms. What a set-up to invite trouble, the exact opposite of what they're supposed to be doing. These agents are supposed to live a "monk-like" existence while they are traveling on duty, and for good reason. And prostitution is legal everywhere in Columbia, not just "tolerance" areas. I'm expecting the head of the Secret Service to have to resign over this, eventually. Re: Too close for comfort - cbelt3 - 04-23-2012 Ah.. I was unaware of the security lapses on their part. Yep, that whole team has got to go.... look for teenaged counterfeiters in Thule, Greenland. "Unemployed. In Greenland !" Re: Too close for comfort - Bill in NC - 04-23-2012 Don't worry, they'll all retire to their pensions & benefits. Even for those that are fired (those not immediately allowed to retire), they'll get their union rep involved and eventually get the same sweet deal as above. Re: Too close for comfort - Lemon Drop - 04-23-2012 I'm OK with them getting the pension they have earned for service up to this time. I think that's SOP anyway. In most cases as I understand it that won't be close to enough to make up for the salary they are losing now. It's a big loss of future earnings potential, career, prestige, reputation, etc. But this mistake doesn't nullify the earlier work they did. Re: Too close for comfort - cbelt3 - 04-23-2012 Odds are most of 'em are pretty youthful too.. ex military and LEO is desired. The 'old hands' are typically too smart to get caught. http://www.secretservice.gov/join/careers_agents.shtml Re: Too close for comfort - mrbigstuff - 04-23-2012 I'm not saying it's right at all, but really. I'm not following. I consort with beautiful women all the time; never felt a compulsion (nor a desire) to pay for sex...
