HD replacement in an iMac.....don't try this at home? - dad@home - 11-07-2012

Hard disk in my 2007 24" iMac is toast. (I think the 5400rpm drive is running at 33 1/3)

The iFixit instructions don't look too hard.

I'm pretty handy... have made a hackintosh, replaced a mobo in a Macbook Pro, put together a plug in hybrid Prius but I am scared of ruining the glass or LCD when I pull it apart.

Any words of wisdom from those that do this for a living?

Thanks

John

A shot of good single malt scotch before you start to steady your nerves...

take your time, and you should be OK.

The glass is the hardest part...

Get suction cups and remove and place in a safe, perfectly clean spot. I set it on edge with the cups still attached and lean it against a wall so that what I look though isn't touching any surface.

If dust settles on the inside, I'd blow it away with canned air.

Just follow every step carefully and it's not that bad of a job.

It was daunting, if I'm remembering the right model. But it's quite do-able.

There is a video on OWCs site.

Thank you all

I'm gonna go for it!

(my wife will kill me if I screw it up....its her machine).

Just make sure to keep a firm grip on the screw driver and keep a finger between the screw and the screen. You don't want the bit to slip out and scratch the screen.

Your finger will heal, the screen won't! :-)

you could cover the LCD with oak-tag or thin cardboard if you want to protect it...
