Here in Washington, they were recommending booster shots for everyone, regardless of your vacination history.

when i had my annual physical in September my doctor suggested i get a whooping cough shot along with my tetanus. i looked at her and said "Whooping cough? For real?" Her reply was "Yes. It's back." So i got the shot.

Vaccine effectiveness ? Interesting. I'd heard about that when my youngest needed the booster .
Glad this isn't another case of that bad science "vaccines cause xyzzdf" fakery.

I too got a booster a few months ago, on the recommendation of my physician, during a routine visit.
According to a local source at the Department of Public Health (I live in Seattle) this outbreak of whooping cough is partly due to the increase in anti-vaccination sentiment among the less-than-bright, easily misled members of our population.
Fewer vaccinations, or sporadic aversion to routine vaccinations, eventually result in an occasional outbreak, or a reemergence of legacy diseases.
I'm not sure how big a role vaccination-aversion plays here, but If this is true, perhaps we can give a round of applause to celebrate a small victory for junk-science promoters (including some fact-challenged celebrities) spooked consumers of their deformed opinions, and even a few hip, anti-"Western Medical Establishment" morons for contributing to an under-vaccinated generation.

Especially in our more rural counties, and the one just north of us, Snohomish. It was so bad, the county dept of health paid for the vaccine.

I went to get my tetanus booster and asked specifically for a pertussis (whooping cough) inoculation at the same time and was told that the tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccines all come together and they can't even get one without the others anymore.
...So, folks are skipping not just the pertussis vaccine, but all three.
At least.
(Not that that's especially surprising news.)

Parents are not required to give these shots so diseases return. The laws should still require shots. Sometimes "freedom" doesn't make you free...it makes you sick and dead !

I think I had whooping cough as a child, before the vaccine was widely available. I know I had mumps, and measles.
