iMac overheated, shut down, won't start - blooz - 01-08-2013
My elderly friend called me to say that her iMac shut down while watching a movie. It has a history of getting hot in that upper left hand corner. i've seen several mentions of these things overheating on line.
Anybody have any experience with this? I'm hoping it's not fried and that this is curable.

Drill some holes on the backside of the hot spot, and then epoxy a USB fan over the holes; it be chillin' afta dat.

Let it cool for a half hour, then start it again.
If it starts up normally when cool then the problem was probably overheating.
And most of the time, that's from poor ventilation. Get it out from under the shelf and away from the wall.

If it still won't start, unplug the power for at least a half hour. If that still doesn't work, keep the power unplugged overnight.

Intel or G5? G5 iMacs had the capacitor issue....

SMC Fan control - depending on the model - solution to defeat the heat.... Why a stock iMac doesn't rev it's fans auto when the heat there totally other question. Course - not going to help at this point if it's not starting up at all now.

The old MacBooks I maintain for friends/family sound like jet engines when playing Flash. Awful really. My hack Mac 64bit Atom NVIDIA ION doesn't complain nearly as much. I'd still rather have the native video stream than the Flash wrapper of course. Unfortunately, Amazon Prime doesn't offer that option.

I'd thought I'd answered earlier last night but must've had a brain fart and forgot to hit "post."
Anyway this thing is not responsive at all. Won't start, period.
I'm assuming that means something other than the hard drive, since it wont even light up.
I'm going to have to call the apple store today.
