Greenbacks can't buy iPhone - graylocks - 10-27-2007

i just saw this article that Apple will no longer accept cash for iPhone sales.

is that really legal? i mean, greenbacks are legal tender. although i'm not one of them, i have heard of people who refuse to use credit or debit cards. is this another step down the slippery slope of a cashless society?

i do not believe it is legal to refuse cash, as long as it's not like $100 bill for penny candy.

If you pay cash for an iPhone, the terrorists win.

I thought if you unlocked an iphone, the terrorists win.

Not only do the Terrorists win, they consistently cover the number.
I'm makin' a killing over here.

I'd bet it's legal to refuse cash, "Legal tender for all debts public and private" not withstanding.

There may be exceptions.

A vendor can refuse any form of payment that it wants to.
Cash/Credit/Money Orders/Check/Bank Check
I have paid for penny candy with a $100 bill.
It all depends on the vendor.
In fact, today I paid for a Mocha Joe at BK with a $100 bill, got $98 and change back.

But what's to prevent someone from buying an Apple Gift Card with cash, and then using the gift card to buy the iPhone? hmm....

according to the article, it's credit or debit card only. maybe you can't use a gift card. what if you have something like an American Express or Visa gift card that stores run like a credit card? i imagine those don't fly either; i bet the point of this is to tie the purchase to a specific buyer.

What prevents someone from getting one of those Visa gift cards that, as far as the merchant is concerned, is a debit or credit cart?
