Has anyone noticed new (up to) 10% ethanol stickers on the pumps? - olnacl - 05-23-2008

Or is it just S. F?. In the past two weeks, the stickers are appearing (seemingly) on every pump and brand (I actually only checked 4 major brands but they are my choices between home and work)

I first saw the stickers on pumps at my local station when I filled up two weeks ago, and my fuel economy dropped almost 2 mpg running that week. This week Monday I filled at the same station and the mileage was the same. My averages are based upon 6000 miles of driving the exact route at the same times of day almost without variation, so the gasoline seems to be the culprit. Up until 2 weeks ago, I was averaging 27+ and the past two fill ups came out to just over 25. I recall similar economy drops when ethanol blends were introduced in the Midwest back in the late 70s. The current very hot weather we're experiencing may be an influence, I admit.

Anyone else noticing this? It's a bummer to drop a couple mpg with the price so high.

Just you. Western washington has had 10% ethanol mandatory since the 80s. Ot is an oxygenate, and burns cleaner. But about 3% lower fuel economy. Ethanol's available energy is lower than gasoline, but a 10% blend is only about 3% drop.

Have had those stickers on our pumps here in W. Mass. for several years.

Less Mileage, More Cost...

Brought to you by the same Government who thought MTBE was a great idea, and who now wants to control any "excess profits" an industry might have.

Letting government screw with anything that requires more than a 3rd grade education to understand is a bad idea.

Make that a 2nd grade education if we're talking about CALIFORNIA government.

Had 'em here in NV since I've lived here in 2000, but most ethanol mixtures are Oct. 1 - Jan. 1 for air quality reasons (temp inversions in western valleys keeps particulates in the valley air often making air quality as bad as LA, albeit for usually no more than a few days between pressure systems).

Well, hey, we're still trying to get elections figured out.

Actually, it was the "new" part that I was wondering about.

I believe here in the DC area they've been using it for a long time now to reduce emissions. However, I did just notice a big spanking new "10% ethanol" sticker on the pump this morning. Previously, it was just in the fine print somewhere (and maybe it was just during the winter months?)

Paul, I thought MTBE was the oil industry's response to the oxygenate requirement that many local governments were proposing at the time. Arguably it seemed to me, oxygenates were a good idea in helping lower smog related emissions. The government advocated ethanol. The oil industry, because it didn't want to pay farmers for ethanol, rather sourced an alternative that they themselves could supply...methanol. It should've been a no brainer to use ethanol, because methanol was carcinogenic and caused corrosion problems in vehicles. But the oil industry out lobbied the government in this case and won out. The methanol eventually evolved into the similar methyl based derivative, MTBE...which is what eventually ended up causing all the environmental issues. There wouldn't have been any issues if ethanol leaked out into the environment.

I may be wrong, but I thought it was a new federal law requiring all gasoline in the US to be 10% ethanol ?!? Stickers showed up here in southeast Virginia a few weeks ago.
