How to open Pagemaker files without using Pagemaker?

Yesterday I asked for help in reading old Word docs, and thanks to those who responded. Today's project is similar...how to open old Pagemaker files. Any suggestions? (p.s. I don't have InDesign which I believe can read PM files)

AFAIK you either need to find a copy of PageMaker (which will not run under OS X), or get InDesign.

I still have PM 6 on my blue G3 running OS 9.1, but have begun to convert the PM files to ID, as I need them.

If all you need are some of the words, you can crack it open in any text editor and search for a string containing part of what you seek. Words are stored in ordinary ASCII, though there are some special characters inserted having to do with hyphenation.

Also, if you just need to read the file I think getting the trial version will do.

You can download a free 30 day trial of InDesign which will let you open the files so you can copy/paste what you need, or export them as PDFs, or print them.

You certainly can run PM under OS X, in Classic. I've done it.

ID won't open all Pagemaker files. How old are yours? I don't think ID can open files made with versions earlier than PM 6; maybe someone else can confirm or clarify.

I'm sure there are people here who could open a few PM files for you.

Right, but that's OS 9, not OS X.

Don't know either, but as I recall PM 6 could open PM 5 files (not always perfectly), and maybe PM 5 for earlier versions. My vague recollection is that there was a major change from PM 4 to PM 5 which was a hassle for those of us with lots of old files.

I have the finished prints but was hoping to access via PM but these files are mid 1986 - whatever version that was!

Looks like PM 1.2:

You'd probably need an older Mac. Would it even run on OSes later than System 7 or on PPC Macs?

It's not really critical, just a nice-to-have. Thanks for the help

Good lord, those are seriously old. I think we started with PM 1.5, in 1986. I think we were using System 5. I'm not at all sure that you could run such an old version of Pagemaker in System 7; you might have to go back to System 6.

You should be able to open them in PM 2, though, if you can find anyone who has that.
