creativity required, how to cut up 3 bins of apples?

every year we quarter apples from three bins and run them through our apple press. We have done this by hand for over 30 years and apparently some people think we should find an easier way to do it. :-) I've looked at those cutters on amazon but I don't think you could do three bins of apples using those. Any creative ideas?

Sawzall with an Apple blade??? We just cut them into quarters too and them run them through the grinder thingie. We fill the bed of an old S-10 pickup with apples but I don't know if that equates with the volume of your three boxes. I'll give you a tip though...drinkin' helps! drink smiley

I was thinking about this too...since I did much of the apple slicing the last two years.

How about two tubes that fit one inside the other. Put blades or wires in the smaller tube. Fill the bigger tube apples. Push them together and you have a stack of quartered apples.

build a scratter ?

I've borrowed a hand crank crusher and it was easier to use if you quartered the pears first, which was what I was doing with pears before feeding them into the grinder or the mixer's grinder attachment.
For pear wine.

I have a wine press, but it won't crush apples or pears, they have to be ground up first before pressing.

Here is the solution. [www.hitrunscore.com] Attach a couple blades at the end of the tube and simply drop the apples in the feeder.

I've got one of these and it works great. You can process at least 2 apples a minute. Got mine at yard sale for about $5.00

I'm not sure you guys grasp the volume that we're dealing with. We're talking about thousands of apples. I think that last year we had 3 bins full of 3 different varieties for our cider press.

Are you guys making hard cider? Man I love that stuff. I think I'm going to try and make some of my own this year.

So I don't have a good idea for your apple slicing dilemma, but why do you need to cut them if they're going to get pressed anyway? The force of the press should pulverize the apple regardless, no?

how about a few apple cutters like this, [www.amazon.com].
I have not used that specific one, just using it to illustrate, and they are not that expensive. You can throw the cores into the press if you like as well.

I think what you need is a neighborhood contest where all the kids in the neighborhood get to compete to see how many apples they can slice up in an hour. Give them each one of these:

The winner gets a trip to the emergency room to get their bleeding fingers sewn up.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I think we got 120 gallons out of those three bins last year. It was a long but fun day. I would say most people fermented their cider although some just froze it for breakfast. This year I'm going to split mine between freezin and fermenting. I'm also going to pasteurize mine this year. So I'm going to need a way to cool it down afterwards. I'll have to think about that.

Hey lazydays,

I remember reading once (can't recall where) about someone in your situation. He had a brand new .......wait for it......garbage disposal unit that he mounted to the underside of a plywood table-top with a hole cut into the center. The apples where poured onto the table and shoveled down the disposal. The juices and pulp drained out via the outake into polyethelene tubs. I recall he made quite a few gallons of hard cider with the effluent!

Hope this is of some help to you.

wow that's a lot of apples! I figure that you've got around 5200 apples and that's being conservative. At the rate of 6 or so a minute, it would take most of a day to do that many! And that assumes no coffee breaks.

Imagine vertical piece of PVC pipe. A couple inches from the bottom, a sawzall is mounted so its blade goes all the way through the pvc. A couple inches above that, there's another sawzall, perpendicular to the first.

Back it up..

why do you have to quarter them?

Ever been to a bagel shop and they have the electric bagel slicer?

or [www.fbpease.net]

I used to work around a big centrifugal slicer (the one in that hyperlink).

Essentially a spinning disc would pin the fruit/vegetable against the circular/surrounding part of the machine, and it would have razor/blades gapped in about three spots along the periphery. The object would be sliced with each passing-by the blades. You could 'rig' something like that. Just get a some motorized flat surface (think lazy-susan), and just put a wall around it and gap it with some big razors from a hardware store. Better yet, buy some of those cheap mandolin slicers and just put that at a spot along the periphery.

That is IF slices would work for you, too.
