Why can't you talk and surf the web at the same time on Verizon?

That's one thing I never understood - being able to talk and surf the web or switch to a different application while talking to someone. So how come you can do it on ATT and not on Verizon? What "technology" is behind it - ?

No, they're abandoning CDMA for LTE, just as AT&T is abandoning GSM for LTE. Sprint actually has the jump on both of them with their stake in Clearwire...if Clearwire can stay in business long enough.

I think, but I am not sure, that the new 4G will cure that problem and that the speculation is that Verizon will get the iPhone when it gets its 4G network in place. I may be wrong about this, but that is what I remember reading, somewhere.

Edit: LTE = 4G

Just so my post and the one above make sense.

I doubt AT&T will abandon 3G any time soon, even after they start 4G.

VZW won't abandon CDMA for voice for several more years. VZW's LTE is for data only. And right now on 3G, I can talk and send/receive text messages at the same time on my Droid X. I just can't boot up the web browser while talking. VZW's LTE will use a GSM-like sim card, so talking and web surfing can be done simultaneously. And VZW's LTE will operate at 700MHz and so will penetrate into buildings much better than any others.

My understanding of the projected U.S. frequency allocation is all LTE will operate @ 700MHz.
Thus VZW's will not "penetrate" any better than any other LTE carrier.
Of course with the FCC {politicians} involved, no one can say for sure what the end
results will be banghead smiley

Try sending or receiving an MMS while talking on the phone. Doesn't work.

Try sending an MMS or use other data services on a slower EDGE or GRPS node of a GSM network. Doesn't work either. There are still plenty of EDGE only areas or devices for GSM networks. My Nokia e72 only supports EDGE on T-Mobile, consequently I can't talk and use data services at the same time. That's why I have a MiFi on Virgin Mobile.

Interesting. Friday with Sprint I was talking on my phone and sending text messages at the same time.

MMS aren't text. Multimedia. Audio, video, and/or photo. SMS works fine, MMS doesn't.

Verizon is working on protocols that will allow for voice and data simultaneously over CDMA, and i predict they will be rolled out before the Vz iPhone goes live. Whether and how well that will work remains to be seen. It's not a limitation of the network, though, it's a limitation of the protocols as written. Don't look for Apple to switch the iPhone to LTE/4G anytime soon. The data protocols are up and somewhat working, but the voice protocols haven't been completed yet. It's not ready for primetime as a full data + voice network from a development perspective. Will most carriers be moving over? Yes, eventually. But don't count on ATT or Apple to jump from GSM & 3G anytime soon.

Sorry for redundancy with previous posters - thought it was simpler to recapitulate everything in one paragraph.

Still takes data to send though.

No, not the same way an MMS actually triggers a data connection.

With Sprint's 4G network, it's not an issue. So it would behoove one to look into one of their 4G products.
