20020 4 Cyl Camry due for Smog, last time HC = 53... Max 54

Not sure how to get the HC down.

Will do air filter, and oil change, etc, before recheck.

What else can I check?

Hate to be a real novice, but looked at the 4 cylinder and did not even see a distributor cap and or wires going to Spark Plugs... So not sure what a tuneup would involve.

Will get out the Haynes book this afternoon.

High HC means incomplete combustion. This can often be due to defective ignition components, but could also be due to a misfire resulting from a bad oxygen sensor. You really should get it diagnosed because high HC will also cause catalyst failure eventually, which is a very expensive fix. That said, some cars naturally run close to the legal limit so there may be nothing wrong. Ask your mechanic about this for your particular car. Replacing the plugs, wires, rotor and cap (assuming you have a standard distributor) is definitely a no brainer if they are reaching the end of their design lifetime. How many miles since they were changed?

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Also a catalytic converter failure may have the same results. I'm kind of surprised the 2002 model isn't showing a 'check engine' light- they're usually well wired in to the emission controls. Now a bad cat (or missing ?) won't show up on the emission controls- they're all upstream.

Make extra special sure that your engine and exhaust system are at operating temperature before the test. That can affect things as well.

O2 sensor. If you are mechanically inclined, you may be able to do it yourself.

Get the OBD II code read at AutoZone or similar place and go from there. You don't want to be replacing parts willy-nilly hoping to find the problem.

No they're not. There is usually at least one oxygen sensor downstream of the cat to monitor cat condition.

None of my cars have a O2 after the cat. That is something that was added recently to cars. My guess would be around the 2002-05 model years when the newer ODB came out.

OBDII was required starting in 1996 and included the requirement for a downstream oxygen sensor. My '96 bimmer definitely had a downstream sensor. It could be that your sensors are mounted on the catalyst itself and you don't realize that they are downstream sensors.

I would not worry about it until the car actually fails the test.

Agreed. On its most recent smog test my 2001 Accord actually did better on some measurements than it did on its previous test.

It is what it is.
