Is there a free utility to convert .MOV to .FLV?

I see "free download" everywhere, but it's always $30-40 to activate the app.

Anything free out there that converts .MOV files to .FLV, other than uploading to YouTube and downloading the converted file from them?

Thanks.

I used ffmpeg for that last time I needed to do it.

...which was a very long time ago.

'Kind of feels like you're ruining a good movie file when you transcode to flv.

Google is your friend...

Google would be my friend is there was a listing for a truly FREE converter. All those are the same paid apps I saw on two other searches. "Free download" is worthless if you have to pay before you can actually use the thing.

Thanks, anyway.

Umm... ffmpeg is free and does appear in the Google results when I click that link.

You're right .... Free is tough to come by. I went through same search and settled on FLV Mate ... Clunky interface but quick and does the job.

I have a .mov that was produced with an older program that when I try to open it I get the window about needing QT7 and do I want to download it. I went to zamzar and there are a million formats to choose from. If I want to just display it in a video format which should I choose to convert it to?

.mov will play in Quicktime Player, already on your Mac. Maybe do a Get Info on the file to change it to always open with that instead of the older Quicktime Player 7---sounds like you didn't install that when you moved to Snow Leopard?

Never saw any option to load it separately. Will try the Get Info thing. Thanx.

OK, just went to Get Info for the file and it says QT (latest version) is the default app to open it. When I double click it says I need QT7 to play it.

If it's just that file, try VLC. If it's all .mov files you have that are causing a problem, something is wonky with your OS---because .mov is actually QT' native file format.

Well that may be-my iMac has been flaky ever since I updated to 10.6.3. I've posted about it a few times. My iMac crashes and freezes like it had OS 9 installed.

Honestly, you probably don't need to convert them the way you think. Convert them to H.264, then Flash can use that to play with a swf.

That's Greek to me-and I'm not Greek! How do I convert to H.264 and what is an "swf" (I don't want Flash to play with a single white female)?

Your web browser doesn't play FLVs. It plays SWFs, which play FLVs. SWFs can also play .mp4 files.

So depending on what you're doing, it may be easier to convert them to mp4s instead of FLVs.

MacX DVD Converter Pro and DVD Ripper Pro were recently available individually for free, but are/were not upgradable or eligible for support. Those do what you're looking for. They're currently giving away their iPhone DVD Video Converter Pack, which is not as full featured, and is geared for making your DVD stuff available for your portable devices and may or may not be of help. Their main Mac Converter/Ripper combo pack is available now for the $50 you don't want to spend (but you get upgrades & support). Don't know if the Converter giveaway code that was good thru Nov 15th will still work or not, but it appears to still be available at Softpedia... and the Halloween ended Ripper code is still posted on Silvermac... Good luck. Leopard or later required.
