Mac Mini shutting down while asleep- Anyone?

I just bought a new Mac Mini- the aluminum one. I've had it running since Friday. Every night I put it to sleep. I've confirmed it through the blinking power light. I've even woken it up and put it back to sleep to confirm it. Every morning when I go in to wake it up, it is totally shut down and I have to push the power button and restart. It chimes, goes through the boot process and all is well. I can put it to sleep and wake it again in a few minutes.

This morning after I used it I put it to sleep, left the house for a couple of hours and when I returned it again had shut down.

Any body have a clue what's going on? I've tried to do some searches on the web and on Apple's discussion boards but can't find anything that addresses my issue. Basically, after being asleep for several hours (haven't timed it to see how long it takes) the mini just powers off.

I've reset the PMU and PRAM, I've repaired permissions, etc. It is the stock mini with nothing else added thus far except for software and files I migrated over from my old mini.

Is it plugged into a UPS? May be a power issue, not a mini issue...

I have one USB external drive connected, I will remove it and see what happens. But why would that cause it to shut down after a period of sleep- just wondering?

It is not plugged into a UPS- straight into an outlet.

I'll continue to investigate. Thanks.

sounds like a simple question, but have you checked your energy saver preferences?

Maybe somehow it is set to shutdown everyday at the same time.

Ruling that out, could it be that your electric has been going off for a split second here and there? Could you have a lose cord, either connected to the Mac Mini or the power outlet?

Maybe check the "start up automatically after a power failure" feature in the energy saver preferences and then check the system logs to see if it was activated.

At least that might tell you what is happening.

Checking the system log files might well yield your answer anyway. Go to your utilities folder--->console-->log of your choice

Nothing in the energy panel, I checked that first. If there have been any power failures or fluctuations, it isn't effecting anything else.

I'm checking the console log, but don't really see anything that jumps out at me, but I'll keep looking. Thanks.

Maybe Apple rolled out that new improved MacBook Air deep sleep to all the new Macs. Just kidding, I think.

Here is the latest read from my Console log after my last episode in which I went to wake the Mini and found it to be shut down:

1/3/11 10:49:32 PM configd[14] Sleep: Platform Failure - AC
com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.powermanagement.sleep
com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
com.apple.message.result: Failure
com.apple.message.uuid: C225D516-6637-454C-AD8F-1DE4AFA548FA

Anyone decipher this for me? Looks like maybe a power failure. Note, this message is what the Mac apparently recorded when I hit the power button to restart. 10:49 is the precise time when I went into my office and hit the power button to start it up again.

If it's new, I'd just take it to the Apple Store.

'Might be a bad power supply.

Doc, thanks for the link- I could have written most of that post, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right down to the error message in the log.

I have set up a call tomorrow with Apple, we'll see where that gets me.

Bad power supply? Or a under voltage problem with the electrical service.

Cheers!
