Need some InDesign help: master pages

Why does ID have to be so complicated?

So I have a file from someone else, has folios with date -- need to change the date.

text box has dotted line around it.

*nothing* I do will select the text inside.

So turned to Help and I found how how to "detatch" a master item.

Made my change.

Now the change doesnt apply itself to any page.

To make matters worse, now when I drag "A" master page to an "A" spread, it changes to "B"

Apparently my spread "folio" is "A"? Ugh. What a cluster___.

I guess I could just start from scratch.

Not entirely sure I understand the question, but I have better luck right-clicking on a page I want to apply a new master to, and selecting "Apply Master to Pages...".

Also, to bring up a master page for editing, double click on the master page in the Pages pane... then you can edit to your hearts desire... but beware; it will change that master for EVERY page that master has beeen applied to.
You can duplicate the master, and edit the copy, and apply the new master to pages.

I hope I understood enough of the question to have helped a little!

Did you make the change to the master page or just a random interior page?

"Now the change doesnt apply itself to any page." I think this is because you detached the master item, it's not supposed to affect any other pages. It's been detached from it's master status.

I'm not sure exactly what you did but it sounds like you should go to the master page marked folio, unlock the text box with date in it and change accordingly, re lock it and tis should apply itself to any relevant interior pages that have the master folio page applied.

I love InDesigns handling of Master and interior pages by the way. Unlocking master page items is heading down a bad road. it makes thing just like a normal element and not universally editable through master pages.

Sorry I cant seem to explain it better. Im not a newb user (so I know the difference between master pages and regular ones), but a Quark user. Last time I touched an Adobe page layout app was PainMaker 7.

Im trying to edit the folio on the master spread, labeled "A-folio".

I finally figured out how to do that via Adobe help. (although it was more click and guess, right click, guess)

I got the text changed on "A-folio" -- and apparently that has worked.

What Im still trying to figure out is why all the pages in the page layout window have "A" on them, when clearly the "A" master is called "B-InteriorPage"

Confusing.

Pages 2-4 in your screenshot have the A-Folio Master applied to them. B-InteriorPage also has the A-Folio Master page applied to it (you can apply Master pages to other Master pages).

At least I could U S E PageMaker . . . InDesign was programmed be a bunch of monkeys. Fortunately, I am retired now, so I don't really give a frack, but still . . . Rhinos could have done a better job.

I hope this will help a little bit. The letters that you are seeing on the master page thumbnails are the "based-on" master pages if there are any selected. They are not the "letters" of that master page. All of the master page names run down the left side of the list.

Something like this...

Hope this helps and that I understood what you were asking.

And Kahuna1342 swoops in for the win!

I think he nailed it... ( at least, as I'm understanding the question... )

If you're used to using Quark, and you have to use InDesign, it's going to be confusing and a pain in the ass sometimes. And vice versa.
