How to keep the fizz in the soda bottle
Posted by: Dakota
Date: March 06, 2011 07:15PM
The 2 liter soda bottles we buy lose most of its fizz long before we drink it all. I bought one of those bottle caps with a lever and rubber rings but didn't help much. This has to be a problem for most soda drinkers.

Drink it faster. Still cheaper than cans. Or you could try something like this [www.amazon.com]

Make sure the soda is chilled before opening the bottle the first time.

I never figured out how to keep the fizz in the bottle myself. I just buy smaller sizes. The big guys are for parties.

I hate the fizz...I shake the bottle until almost all the fizz is gone then I drink my first sip. Delight!

I think I read somewhere if you shake the bottle 1st then place the bottle close to you ear as you take the cap off you can hear the fizz... It might be worth a try *(:>*

I have been able to buy 2 liter Coke bottles for a buck for 25 years at our local ACME store. It is hard to pass that by for smaller bottles costing perhaps three times as much. That fizz-keeper has good reviews but 30 to 50 pumps? I may have to head to Sears for a portable air compressor.

Putting pressure back in is all wrong. Squeeze the bottle until the level of the remaining soda reaches the narrow top of the bottle, then screw the cap tight. It works well if you put the cap mostof the way on, squeeze the air out, and give the cap its last quarter turn with one hand while you keep the bottle squeezed withthe other. It's all about the amount of surface area exposed to the air.

A pump might work there too.

Plastic soda bottles are gas permeable. The plastic is bi-axially oriented to minimize the number spots where the CO2 molecules can escape, but it isn't perfect. Most soda bottles have a shelf life of less than 30 days from creation to consumption. In that time they loose something like 50% of the CO2 that they're packaged with. Either drink it faster, buy smaller bottles, or use glass bottles

It is absolutely counter-intuitive but it helps a lot if you shake the bottle after putting the cap back on. It should feel hard before going into the fridge (yes, the double-entendre is intentional though accurate).

Still, that will only buy you an extra day or two.

This does seem to be a conundrum of the age.
I've attempted BernDog's approach before but found it to be much harder to get the cap off after the bottle has sat for a couple of hours. Squeezed distorted bottles don't stand up well in the fridge, or at least not in mine.
I buy Mt Dew in 12 oz cans & return the empties to the recycle yard after I've collected a 20 gallon container full of flattened cans.

I bought a SodaStream machine and haven't looked back. No more flat pop, no more having to go to the store and bring back 2L bottles and then sending them to the landfill.
