Left turn on red?!?
Posted by: Mr. Kerchak
Date: March 10, 2011 06:03PM
I was taking an online driver's safety course to lower my insurance & stumbled on left turns on red are legal in most places.

As a life long resident of NYC I'm always nervous making that right turn on red when I'm traveling.

But left turn on red. Insanity. Does anyone actually do this? Can any country that allows this actually call itself civilized?

I don't care where I am or what the law is there. Even if I can see miles in every direction & I'm the only one on the road. I'm not doing it!

left turn from one way to one way unless posted is legal here.

States allow or are considering to allow legality to RUN red lights...

How do the states with red light cameras work the 'turn on red' rules?
I've never been in a state that does that.

I have, on many occasions. Just as it would be ridiculous to make a left turn in front of oncoming traffic, it is as ridiculous to sit at a red light when there is no oncoming traffic in sight. Common sense must prevail when doing this (which is why most states disallow it), but done intelligently this is no more dangerous than making a right turn at a red light.

Thanks for pointing out the flaws in my reasoning N-OS.

I will now make left turns on red when appropriate.

Depends on the city or street. In San Bernardino. Some two way streets allowed you to turn left on red to another two way street. Im my local city this is also allowed.

Not in WA. It's from a street to a one-way street. The street you're on doesn't have to be one-way.

[apps.leg.wa.gov]

or a left turn from a one-way street or two-way street into a one-way street carrying traffic in the direction of the left turn; unless a sign posted by competent authority prohibits such movement.

Also, this state considers an on-ramp to be a one-way street. So if you're making a left turn onto a freeway on-ramp and the light is red, you may make the turn if there's no traffic coming and the light is red.

New York state's right turn on red law also has left turn on red, from one way to one way, as mentioned above...

Is it required to stop completely when turning on a red light in all your different locales?

yes, otherwise you haven't complied with the red stop light/sign. In Washington State, it is a full stop, and then 3 seconds before your turn. Countless people get nailed here for NOT waiting the full 3 seconds, or slowly creaping through the stop, then going.

Today I was in a left turn lane with a red light, waiting to turn in to a shopping center. Nothing was coming my way so I turned left on red.

Countless people get nailed here for being in front of cars and trucks that have long forgotten that part about stopping when turning on a red.

I've never been in a state that does that.

We have red-light cameras around here. I love them, even though I got a ticket for a right turn on red. When I got the ticket, I was furious, because I knew from the intersection that I had made a right turn.

Then I went online and watched the video of me turning right on a red light without stopping. It was pretty damning.

The cameras take high resolution pictures that show the license plate and the driver's face, as well as video of the incident.

so you now have video evidence of a legal drivers being rear-ended by people not obeying multiple laws.

If everybody drove intelligently there would be no need for 90% of traffic laws.
