Squirrel attacking residents of Vt. neighborhood

The first thing that jumped into my mind is that my dog would love that challenge. In the past 3 years, she has caught 2 squirrels on hikes, and scared at least a dozen more.

A squirrel jumped on someone's back and they called it an attack.

How do they know that it wasn't just looking for a ride to the next tree?

Or it's somebody's pet. Mine used to climb right up my back and sit on my shoulder - she loved bike rides, she was a speed demon smiling smiley

(but I'm with Paul, if it's actually attacking people, put it down... rabies shots are no fun from what I hear)

Good Luck!

I've seen squirrels do some whacky things and some can get rather bold.

I've had a wild turkey attack me because I got too close to "its' " bird feeder.

There's more than one way to go ballistic isn't there.

I agree that it might have been a pet. A friend of my father had a squirrel and it would run up and perch on your shoulder just like OWC Jamie describes. It would jump onto your back, too.

Wow---those rodents have long claws, and their teeth grow so fast they constantly have to chew on things. And people keep them as pets?!

Rabbits have the same sort of teeth and they are a common pet.

Squirrels are WONDERFUL!
I LOVE squirrels.

Seriously, we get the black squirrels (they're officially called grey squirrels, but the black colored ones seem to dominate) and they are quite comical.

They also draw in the predators. If you watch long enough, a fox or bobcat can be seen pouncing on one every so often. I've counted as many as 30 under the feeder on a good day.

Am I the only one who is rooting for the squirrel in this scenario? Pesky humans... intruding upon squirrel territory. smiling bouncing smiley

Although in all seriousness, the likelihood is good that this is a mom, who is only trying to protect her babies. I've only ever seen rodents behave this way when they're protecting either themselves or their babies from attack, or if they've been previously mistreated by human beings.

Yep their claws are long but you got used to it. As long as you were wearing jeans, it was OK LOL smiling smiley She was an awesome pet - raised from a baby by an old couple up the street from me. The old guy died, wife moved to a retirement home. Squirrel adopted me more than anything I guess. She'd swim in our pool, and sun on the deck all stretched out on the roof or railing of the deck to dry off. Cool pet to have - not an indoor pet by any means.

You can have all of mine. I'll even show you where all their condos are in the norwegian spruces and you can have their condos, too.

You haven't lived until you've had a squirrel run up your fishnet-stockinged leg. OW. (This was the late sixties, btw, hence the fishnets).

That's awesome! Those squirrels look badass! I love them as well and one of the things I've noticed living on the west coast (having grown up on the eats coast) is that the squirrels in CA are about half the size of those back east. Still pretty cool and fun to watch (and feed).

If times get tough enough, yeah, i'll barbecue a rodent or two. But I would probably wait until the turkey and deer numbers bottom out first.

Squirrels crack me up.

I *think* this is a link to a great display of squirrel determination. Yeah, they can be pests, but I find that they are always amusing.
