I have found the Safari RAM hog and KILLED it.

Thanks to Little Snitch.

I've seen people complain about Safari using too much RAM, but until the past 10 days, I never thought
anything about it. Then I noticed Safari was using 1GB of RAM (iStat or MenuMeters for real time display
of RAM use on application launch/quit).

LittleSnitch started asking me, on behalf of two items it SAYS are Google Software Update - and it would
ask repeatedly, one after the other, even though I denied them "until quit" - because technically, they
WEREN'T quitting.

I thought at first it might have been Google Notifier, and that was the only reason I put up with it. I looked
at where LittleSnitch said it was located - HD > Library > Google. I took the entire folder and Zipped it,
tossed the folder, and emptied the trash and restarted.

Now Safari only uses 350MB - and something by Google recreated the folder on relaunch (not restart),
but the "plug-in" is not there, just an item called "ticket something or other..." and that's all.

I still have the Zip archive of the original crap - but I didn't like the look of the IP that Little Snitch gave
me for either item, even though Google balloons appeared. It's one reason I'll never run a computer
without Little Snitch. After that first day of telling it what to allow (Safari, Mail, Google Notifier, iChat, etc.)
when it pops up, you need to pay attention.

I still don't know what it was, but there isn't anything that is NOT functioning. And if it really was Google,
then I hereby condemn it to having been EVIL.

If you think Safari is using too much RAM - try this route. Zip the folder, then trash it. If it is something
you absolutely need, you still have it in the archive, but in a few days, you'll know whether or not that is true.

That is a good bit of sleuthing. So is this 10 days after killing the google process, or only a few? If only one or two, would you update in a week?

I recall reading that the google updater software is really persistent. I've had it blocked with LS for some time now, but we'll see what trashing those folders does. My safari routinely uses 1 to 2 GB of real memory and an equal amount of vm.

This is after killing it on Saturday. No sleuthing really- Little Snitch alerted me what the "item" was that
wanted to phone home, and I found it unusual that ANY Google app would need to "update" several times
per day. That's ridiculous.

The folder that replaced it (this is NOT the same as the Application Support folder for Google) still just
has two ZERO K files in it. The App Support folder (HD> Library> Application Support> Google ) has
my unused Google Voice doc in there and "Google Voice & Video Uninstaller" that were renewed on
Feb 13, 2011.

I've not installed anything from Google, to my knowledge, in several months to this particular drive. Only
System Updates from Apple, and I permitted a Firefox update the other day, when I launched to see if
Safari was the only browser unable to see a page (it was not) - and so, the latest version of FFox installed.

I'm using Little Snitch 2.3.3 - though I gather that 2.3.4 is out, and these are exactly the kind of thing that
I find it valuable for.

btw... I clear the browser cache EVERY DAY, and also, I use MacScan to remove tracking cookies, about
once a week. It generally grabs about 25 tracking cookies - but it isn't getting all of them. I can't even
go to Amazon because someone posts a link about a SHOE without suddenly getting emails every week
about shoes and baby goods and other stuff that I inadvertently looked at because of a Forum link.

Right now - I relaunched the browser (I let MacScan check the entire HD and left the house), and I had
850MB of RAM used, and now there is 1150MB used. I have auto-load extensions like Google Notifier,
VMWare 3.x (that I wish I could turn OFF), MenuMeters and GoogleCalendar that all load up on StartUp.

Otherwise, I'm just under 680MB on start-up, before the menu bar loads the other items.

For those interested -- I loaded Tiger (11a390) and not only did it use a lot more RAM before the menu
bar (900 to start) but my Core2Duo CPU load was between 55-60% ***AT IDLE*** vs. 2-5% with 10.6.6.

I keep that on a spare 20GB partition for testing things out. That was a disappointing first look - that's
for certain. I hope they get that back under 10% - or there won't be any Core2Duo power left over to do
anything else!

WOW - Exactly my problem! Little Snitch and Google wanting access over and over! Thanks I'll do what you did and see if it helps!

Why do I have to "zip" it?

Can't I just do a "move to trash?"

I zip it just in case it disables something that you USE/NEED.

I don't throw it away until I'm positive it hasn't disabled something. Once I'm comfy with that,
it goes into the can.

Okay, if you're fine after removing it, won't that serve as assurance that I can just dump it?

Has anyone found out what it's for?

Is your Safari using 1GB+ of RAM? If not - that might be why NOT.

I only found it because it kept wanting to talk - and that was new, and Little Snitch told me
where the item was that kept wanting access to the outside world.

I've had Safari hog a lot of memory in the past, but I don't have that folder in my Library either. Right now, Safari is only using 450MB of RAM.

Anyone know how to clear "inactive" RAM? I have 14GB of RAM, and it says only 2.15 GB is free, while 6.36GB is "inactive".

type "purge" in Terminal (minus the quotes), hit return.

You need to have X11 installed though, I think.
