Movies that scared the crap out of you when you were young...

But now seem kind of silly.

Phantasm.

Watching it now, I want to laugh.

I sit on a man’s back, choking him and making
him carry me, and yet assure myself and others
that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his
lot by all possible means — except by getting off
his back. - Leo Tolstoy, novelist and Philosopher

I can't think of the name of it, (I was very young when I watched it) but it was about a severed hand that chased people around and killed them (I think?).

Sound familiar? dunno smiley

Another one was the color remake of "The Blob"... yikes!!

Oh, and "The Incredible Shrinking Man" scared me too. That damned spider! Yow!

EDIT: Heh! volcs beat me by a minute with "The Blob"

First horror movie: The original Friday the 13th.

Silly in hindsight:
The episode of The Dick Van Dyke show with Twilo and aliens with no thumbs..

Also, the Scooby Doo with the Headless Horseman. Don't know why.

In NYC, back in the late 50's ~ early 60's, WOR, Channel 9, ran the "Million Dollar Movie". On weekends, they would run the same movie over and over and over again. "The Blob"; "Them"; various "Godzilla" releases and many more I can't recall right now. I vaguely remember that radiation from the Atom Bomb was usually blamed for the mutations. All laughable now but back then, as a child, it was scary stuff.

From about six to twelve years of age, if I watched a horror movie. I'd have nightmares. I think it was because I had such an active imagination. Once I was a little older, I guess I could accept that a movie was just a story.

I've mentioned it here before but sometime around the mid 80's my dad and I went over to this dude's house who had a color tv, a vcr and a satellite. Everything we didn't. And we watched the Thing and Alien back to back. Scared the bejeezus outta me.

And now that I think about it, I remember my mom and I went to an art fair once and stayed at someone's house while they were out of town. We watched the Prophecy that night and that scared the crap out of me. I remember she got annoyed b/c i kept switching back and forth between that and something else.

"5 Million Years to Earth", hands down.

When the Alien/Devil/grasshopper appears at the end I was behind the couch.

Karen Black was in that "Trilogy of Terror."

I also vividly remember "Bad Ronald." Creepy.

Regarding "The Thing"...

In some cuts (usually only shown on TV.. )..
The ending... after the two guys burn the place down, and sit down to drink while they freeze to death...

There's a shot in the morning... burned out buildings, smoke still rising.
And a Sled dog (?) lopes over the hill... looks down at the base... and then trots off.

THAT was the topper there...

That cut isn't on the DVD version I've seen, nor (apparently) on the theatrical release version. And not on ALL of the TV cuts...

The local theater in Ft Lewis (WA) ran 10¢ "kidee" movies during the summer. I was in 2nd & 3rd grade at the time and was introduced to serials. This is when I first saw the Blob (B&W) which remained in my head for a long time.

Also remember a movie where bad guy aliens landed in a back yard, went underground and sucked people through the ground and brainwashed them. The main character was a young kid and what got me was the frustration of not being able to do anything - not being heard.

I wonder if that's the movie I remember watching as a kid. It started with some people driving down the highway, and then I think the passenger in the car stuck his hand out the window, and somehow or other, it got pinned between a semi truck and something else, I think, and ripped off. I think it then crawled around on its own for the rest of the movie. Seems like it was on HBO or something.

I nagged my mom for weeks to let me go see Alien; I was 10 the summer it came out. She finally gave in, telling me as I got out of the car, "It's going to give you bad dreams!"

She was right. I still have nightmares about that monster to this day.

That movie is ingrained in my psyche forever, though I would not say it frightened me.

But an episode of Night Gallery where a dude wakes up to find himself being buried alive in a sealed coffin by a zombie cemetery caretaker haunts me to this day. Please make sure I'm dead, kthnx.

There were so many ... most of which are on the list already (starting with Phantasm! that little flying ball really freaked me out).

There was one I saw on TV that I think was called "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" where a couple move into an old house where a fireplace was sealed in a locked room. Of course, being a horror movie, they unseal the fireplace and these little creatures come out and try to abduct the wife.

I'm surprised that the two I'd mention, only one of them had someone already mentioned:

1) Bad Ronald. Pathetically written, but good lord. A psychotic, teenaged killer is hiding in your walls. [www.imdb.com]

2) Kingdom of the Spiders. So-so film, but CLASSIC Shatner. And with a dynamite, terrifying end scene that alone's worth the price of admission. [www.imdb.com]

They've filmed a remake of it with Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) directing. I saw a trailer of it and it looked pretty scary.

Wow - must be getting old. PSYCHO still creeps me out. I get the sweaty palm thing waiting for what I know's gonna happen. JAWS too for the same reason. Hitchcock once said that having two people walk into a room and have a discussion over a table that explodes doesn't creep people out. What does, he said, is having two people walk into a room and have a discussion over a table, cut away to a shot showing there's a bomb under the table, and then cut back to the conversation. After that shot everybody's thinking, "You'd better leave quick. There's a bomb under the table."

Without a doubt, Night of the Living Dead (the original, not the hacked up rereleases).

Also, the first season of Dr. Who scared the heck out of me. The Daleks, so quaint now, were incredibly sinister and scary. Also, the original cybermen (who the Star Trek Borg were based upon) were absolutely frightening.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I was also thinking of "The Hand", but after I checked, "The Hand" was released in 1981. I was already a young adult and fearless by then (Hey, that was the year I got married). Further investigation revealed that "The Hand" was a remake of the movie I was thinking of, released in 1946. It was called "The Beast With Five Fingers".

Anything involving cannibalism. The one that really caused me trouble sleeping at night, having to have my door left open at night (I was 8 or 9 when I saw it), etc., was the twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man".

Spent a good chunk of the movie "just looking for something that rolled under my seat".

Found it the other day at a garage sale on VHS. Going to try it again. When I get my courage up...

The Thing, with James Arness as the "thing" creeped me out after watching it at the Panorama Theater in Van Nuys in the fifties. We had casement windows with the screen on the inside and I would not reach out to pull the window closed. How's that for a memory. Why you would put an electric blanket on a frozen body is another question. Story telling is just that and Carpenters verison adds little.
