No Lion for those hacked Dell Minis out there

"Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will require an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (or better, such as the i3/5/7 series or Xeon chips) and 2 GB of RAM for a compliant install when it ships this summer."

So it looks as though Snow Leopard will be the end of the line for the multitude of hacked netbooks that think they're Macs.

It was fun while it lasted. And each update has been extremely easy since 10.6.4.

Apple already removed support for the Intel Atom chips. And yet the hackers found a way.

It remains to be seen if there is a necessary technical reason why they're removing support. If so, you're right. Otherwise the hackers will find a way. And Core Duo mini owners will have a hack they can use to upgrade.

There are some C2D netbooks.

There are some C2D netbooks.

More importantly there are LOTS of 32-bit Core Duo Macs that will be unable to upgrade. I suppose those systems are now almost 5 years old but they are more than technically serviceable for everyday tasks as long as you're not trying to drive HD 1080p video or the real processor/graphics intensive stuff.

Based on the info at Apple.com (and reports from people who have installed the developer releases on Hackintoshes), my guess is that Lion is 32-bit compatible. There's no distinction made between 32-bit and 64-bit C2D processors in Apple's information--which, of course, doesn't mean Apple's notices are actually correct... but if they are, it should be a relatively simple hack to fool the installer into running on an otherwise-compatible CPU.

What kind of performance you'll get is, of course, another matter entirely...

Dropping Core Duo is a logical progression. They tend to drop support for the oldest supported hardware with every update. The last one dropped by G4 and G5 support - that was much bigger than this.

Can you show me a C2D that is 32 bit? I'm pretty sure all C2D's are 64bit - [en.wikipedia.org]

My bad there... I was conflating "C2D" with the original Core Duo T2300's that shipped in Mac Minis. However, I have seen reports of successful dev release installations with the 32-bit flag set.

If I were Apple, given their minimum requirements exclude CPUs that don't support 64 bit, I would build all of the included OS applications and utilities as 64 bit only instead of Fat 32/64 apps. This would save on disk space and on QA testing. The OS can still run 32 bit apps from 3rd parties, but only 64 bit code would be supplied with the OS.

If this were done, it would pretty much exclude any hacks to try running Lion on 32 bit CPUs even if someone were to build a hacked kernel.
