How to find a long-term rental in Europe?

I'm doing a little research for some friends and wanted advice on best ways to begin such a search. CL is showing very few listings.

BTW, the country is still up in the air - it could be Portugal, Spain or Italy. And they're open to other places, too, so that is a complicating factor. I'm surprised I can't find a good site that aggregates Euro listings of this nature.

What is your definition of long term? If the question pertains to apartments here are a couple of sites to check out:

Not sure what constitutes long term, but I've often booked month-long rentals through VRBO.com and been very happy.

You could also do a home swap, if you have a place to swap....

it's not for me, although in looking around, I'm now quite interested in seeing what is available and counting my pennies.

the length is for a year, BTW. I'm not sure if that is written in stone but that was what we discussed.

You could use a agency such as this one:

Also, we've been very happy with vrbo.com. We tend to wait until the last minute, and then negotiate ("Gosh, your place looks great, and is certainly worth what you're asking, but our budget only goes to $XXX (where that's usually about 75% of what they're asking). We're hoping it would be a win-win for you if it's still available.

It's worked every time. Had a nail-biter or two, but it's worked every time. Of course, we contact 10 places to make sure we get 1 winner, but it works really well.

Never used VRBO, but an agent friend of ours says it's really good.
