Channel 6 News
Young County Deputies are investigating a shooting incident that landed one man in the hospital.
Deputies went to a residence on FM 1768 and Campbell Road Wednesday morning.
They were advised 45-year old Lowell Johnston barricaded himself inside that home and had a gun. He was reportedly threatening to shoot law enforcement.
Deputies say they heard shots fired from inside the house.

A negotiator from the Texas Rangers was called in and was able to get Johnston to respond.
Johnston had made a hole in a window for a "throw phone" he was given by negotiators, but the hole was not wide enough.
Deputies say Johnston used the butt of his rifle to make the hole bigger. When the rifle discharged and shot him in the head.

He was stabilized at the scene then was taken by Air Evac to United Regional where is listed in serious condition.

So would it be self-inflicted or a police shooting? He was following police directions.

I vote for a darwin moment.

not sure if anything is a "freak accident" when you're holding a weapon that can blow your head off

M16's can be fitted with MAID gear for war games which fires a burst of infrared light when the weapon is fired. This light hits a receiver on someones body, and it makes a loud noise signifying that someone has been "killed". People figured out that hitting the stock of the weapon with the palm of your hand would fire the transmitter. This allowed you to "kill" someone without firing your weapon and giving away your position. People also figured out that a piece of black electrical tape over the receivers would prevent them from getting "killed".
