Had to let my DharmaDog go today
Posted by: DharmaDog
Date: July 14, 2011 11:14AM
My beloved friend of nearly 14 years was having great difficulty with mobility lately, and was suffering from an unspecified neuropathy that caused her to slip into an episode about once a week for about 1.5 days at a time where she would not eat or move. My vet managed to bring her back a few times from this, but it was not to be this time.

Dharma stopped eating Monday. Stopped moving Tuesday. Stopped drinking Wednesday or urinating. The new vet here is Raleigh gave her fluids and more pain meds, but indicated we would probably need to make a difficult decision soon.

It was with great sadness that we let her go. We will deeply miss her. She was a wonderful dog, a sweetheart that even people that did not like dogs cared for. She fixed me many years ago, and allowed me to be who I am today. I truly love her.

Goodbye Dharma.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I had to put down my 2 mini Schnauzers several years ago, and it literally ripped my heart out.

Thanks everyone.

I've never had to go through this before. I've dealt with loss before (not well), but it was never a life I was responsible for before. I wasn't faced with tough decisions.

I spent some time today looking at old pictures of Dharma with my family. That helped.

My wife commented that she feels like we need to pick her up from the vet as though nothing happened. I feel the same way.

Dharma left a void here.

Seems to me the greatest gift our pets give us is the opportunuity for us to practice care, responsibility, and kindness towards another being in a way that makes us better people. It is a very unique and rich relationship. Sounds like you've done a fine job.

Sorry to hear of your loss, DD!

Losing a beloved pet often leaves a huge void in our lives. The loss will linger for some time even after you get another animal to care for.

Hope you fill your void with another pooch. You, your wife, and the lucky animal you adopt deserve each other - in the best sense of the phrase.

Good luck, DD!

Thank you again, everyone.

vision63 mentions staying by my side. This recalls two memories for me.

When Dharma was about 6 months old and going through adolescence with awkwardly long legs, a skinny body and a huge head and feet we went and hiked the Enchanted Rock in central Texas. It's a 640 acre granite batholith. We had a great time, it wasn't too hot in the spring. We went back when she was 2 years old, and more physically mature (heavier). We hiked all day, same as before. Towards the end of the day she starting pulling back on the leash and refused to go further. I couldn't figure it out until I looked at her pads - they were raw from walking on rough granite. She never made a sound or indicated she was in pain until she just couldn't go anymore. I felt awful, but the vet explained that she wanted to be by my side and didn't want to disappoint me, so she continued until she couldn't anymore. I felt even more awful. I changed her bandages several times a day and carried her up and down a flight of stairs every time she needed to go outside.

Several years later when I got married, Dharma of course took to my wife. But once my wife was pregnant, Dharma created a new job for herself - my wife's protector. In some ways, Dharma ceased to be MY dog then. She still took her orders from me and wanted my affection and to play with me, but she wanted to be by my wife's side from that point on.

We miss her.
