give it overnight --- if you have externals or multiple drives, it's gonna take even longer.

I had mine indexing today -- and the little light (dot in magnifying glass) was NOT there. I only saw the
CPU usage, and identified the process.

Mine went for 30 minutes today -- and it just randomly started indexing a bunch of ebooks
I had thrown on my external - something I would much rather SCHEDULE that it do when I leave the
computer on at night, and am not using it.

That is why it took so long - your cloned drive was no in the Spotlight Privacy tab.

First, you need to go through all of the categories/choices of your HD top folder and decide which you really need Spotlight to search in. You don't need Applications indexed unless you use the keyboard to open apps. Look for other areas to uncheck from indexing.

My Macs are well-enough organized that I don't use Spotlight at all. My music, pictures, documents and mail are all organized by categories or something else appropriate.

When I do need to search, I use Easy Find because I can narrow the areas for searching.

Gonna ask my Mother if that offer to slap
me into next year is still on the table.

Actually I have two ext. HDDs and my clone drive WAS in the Spotlight Privacy tab - that's why I was curious as to why it was taking so long. But it seems to have stopped.

Thanks guys!
