Includes population within the metro and immediate surrounding area outside the established border

Name them!

I don't think that Los Angeles qualifies as a city. It's just suburbia on steroids.

I am surprised that the Chinese cities are not higher and more numerous.

Also that NYC is as high as it is.

I think Los Angeles qualifies as a city, but the number they gave certainly isn't accurate for that city. As Trouble noted, it's for the surrounding area as well.

[en.wikipedia.org] Population (2010) 3,792,621

If they're going to include surrounding areas in the definition of "city" then they shouldn't confine themselves to physical cities either, but include virtual ones in the list as well.

That's the figure for "Greater Los Angeles." The City of Angels. Hollywood. Land of Movie Stars and Take 2's. The grand birthplace of vision63, the most awesome man on earth. Tho, the spot where I was actually born was about as un-grand as it gets in this country.

I think the only real test is population per area (e.g., square mile, etc.). Say a 10 mile radius from the city center for each city. Maybe they did it that way. Anyway, I can vouch for Tokyo, having lived in Japan for almost 30 years... Most crowded nation in the world for arable land space. Actually, The Netherlands has (or had) the most people per square mile, but not sure if it still does- that is due to its flatness.

LOL... you and MAVIC must be Angels fans (I know... I know... you're probably not. Their owner in Anaheim thinks the team is in Los Angeles, too, though).

I think the metro area designation is valid. Area served by airports from the center city and by major cultural institutions (museums, orchestra companies, theaters, universities to some extent).

Bet all of the developing country numbers are undercounted - China, India, Nigeria, Brazil, Philippines, Egypt, Argentina, Pakistan, Indonesia, Mexico. Russia's probably off too, but could be high or low.

American cities might have undercounts on the illegal immigrant populations.

But I am sure that the Japan and Korea numbers are spot on.

I can't go anywhere in Chicago without running into someone I know.
I always say it's like living in a big small town.
I hadn't realized just how small it really is-- not even in the top 20.
No wonder . . .

If you came here to the bay, you would probably hang out where your friends would likely hang out. I don't think the world is small, I think our worlds are small. Chicagoland is huge.

I would have guessed (in no particular order) Tokyo, Beijing, Delhi, Buenos Aires, Mexico City and possibly Manila and Rio de Janiero which isn't on the list to my surprise. The rest I just haven't heard enough about.

I'd have thought New York would be further down the list than it is. They must be counting up to the Connecticut border.

Absolutely. I've spent time in South Korea, and the population density of Seoul is simply unbelievable.
