Just curious if they were true advocates of the deal or if there was a little somethin somethin on the side too?

Anyone know?

Without auditing them, this is probably the best answer.

They seem to find deals from some places more often.

So it seems like they search for the deals from their sponsors (or places with referral fees) . Then if the deal they posted is beat they will update the post with the new site.

At their birth, the depended on deals being submitted. They still do that, but many of them are provided by the companies themselves. I expect they have marketing arrangements with partner companies that present 'deals' for their use on a regular basis.

I stopped going to DealMac (it used to be my home page) after concluding that many of their "deals" were really just paid ads. This got much worse after they changed the site's format.

The specific product might have been a deal (or not), but there was no editorial control over what actually made sense to buy. I was particularly annoyed by hard drive deals where the same case was available from several "manufacturers" for less than the ones DM was promoting.

I didn't mind a little of this, but it got so excessive that I found the site to be worth less than the trouble to read it.

Good luck.

p.s. I also found that they ignored deals that I submitted. This wasn't the reason I left (J'm not that proud), but it did make me wonder. It undermined any feeling that they were trying to offer readers the best deals.

agree smiley with Winston.

Another reason I stopped visiting is their use of scripts to load banned tracking
cookies on my machines. interclick, doublclick, and adbrite are three
of DM's big partners.

They seem to get stuck on certain not-that-great vendors, like Meritline. Who cares about deals on no-name-brand cheapo adapters that have a 50-50 chance of actually working? Or cheap offbrand drive enclosures--a single search on Newegg gets me pages of those.
