Truck Topic, Do you use gasket adhesive to hold tranny gasket

in place or do you just rub tranny fluid on the gasket and try to keep it up like that when you are changing your tranny fluid. And yes, I will empty the tranny radiator.

From my previous experience(older nissan sentra), I used the gasket adhesive and have not had any problems with it. But the guy at the Auto parts store informed me that the gasket adhesive makes the gaskets hard and eventually they fail before their time. FYI, I will be also using a torque wrench.

Forgot to mention, Automatic Transmission, Nissan Xterra. First tranny fluid change was done by a lube shop.

Opinions/comments/suggestions?

I've always used gasket sealer and haven't experienced any problems.

I use RTV - stays flexible. Recommended for water pumps too.

I've used RTV for other high heat areas, once even used it as the gasket itself for a thermostat (it was the only choice at the time --- on the road).

The stuff really impressed me.

never been inside my tranny before on any car I've owned. The more ancient I get, the more I tend to just want to let someone else fix the stuff.... but I still watch them like an eagle watching a rabbit.

I do what I can. Old changes for sure though.

I read and heard about horror stories about oil changes.
1. Overtightened pan plug/bolt and stripped the pan.
2. Forgot to put oil in.
3. Drain plug only hand tightened, dripped oil on my driveway.
4. Used wrong oil weight.
