Old news...
Licorice plant hasn't been used in making licorice candy for decades... (that I know of.)

My husband was told 15 years ago that as a heart patient he should avoid licorice. Why is the FDA just figuring this out now?

They're like to issue a warning regarding toddlers and pets eating poinsettias in several weeks, too.

In case they don't: be careful with mistletoe and holly berries, too.

I absolutely hated black licorice back when I was a candy fanatic.

Now red licorice was a different story.

him carry me, and yet assure myself and others
that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his
lot by all possible means — except by getting off

Don't confuse Twizzlers or black jellybeans (anise flavoring) with licorice. Real licorice candy is still made with licorice root, which is similar in flavor to anise but is more mellow and naturally sweet—moreso than sugar.

Oh, I know the difference between anus flavored licorice (and yes, I intended that spelling), and the "real thing"...
But "real" licorice flavoring has been a rare thing for decades because of the toxicity issue.
Same with sassafras oil and safrole... and I admit after a quick google that I was probably confusing the two somewhat...
Licorice isn't banned for food, Sassafras is.

Maybe because they're like every other government agency.

I've always been a big fan of black licorice and black jelly beans. Every Easter, my Mom still sends me a bag of black jelly beans.

It's great to enjoy a flavor that everyone else hates...then I don't have to work to worry about others stealing my candy!

I love black licorice, but don't eat it too often. If that's what finally kills me, I'd gladly have it chiseled on my tombstone.
