Had it since 1985, and would think it is dull.

Not at all. I'm sure it's still considered very interesting amongst its fellow disposals, if a little noisy.

You'd be amazed how much smaller and quieter the ones are in this century.

the blades may dull a bit but I think the older models are made better than the newer models. I can't verify that but that is my impression looking at the new models in the stores.

It's a considered a durable good, so at least three years.

The new ones are amazingly quiet. For the amount of time ours runs, though, it hardly seems worth displacing our ancient existing unit.

The blades don't cut things, they actualyl crush the food against the outer housing. The nubs inside should last a long time, until something rusts out and the things stops working I guess.

If you're buying a new one, look for stainless steel inner housing or it'll rust out. Our last model crapped out due to this in about 6 years. Don't buy the cheapest one.

The lower end models (all 'Badger' ISE) are cast metal and unfortunately last as little as 3 years before leaking.

Pick a model with a stainless steel chamber - ISE offers those, but they're pricey.

I picked a Waste King 3/4HP (SS chamber) when my Badger started leaking after 5 years (2nd replacement) - saw good reviews of that brand online.
