why some many PC laptops have 15.6" LED-Backlit (1366x768) Display

isn't this a little low resolution for a 15.6" display? at least 900 vertical would be nice.

If you want quality, you have to pay for it.

PC makers cut costs to keep prices low.

Because 1366x768 is "good enough".

It is cheap. It allows them to use panels mass produced for TV's. Why is the MBA only 1366 x 768?

But the MBA is that resolution at an 11" size display compared to the 15.6" being mentioned. Even the 13" MBA comes with a 1440x900 display now.

So the question appears to be "Why is cheap junk junky and cheap?" Do you really need an answer to that?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Because 1024x768 isn't good enough.

Odd, seems to work fine on the nearly 10" iPad.

So 1366x768 is good enough for a $1000 MBA but the same resolution on a $400 laptop means it is junk?

When you're comparing an 11.6" display to a 15.6" display, yes, that's exactly what it means.

I can not agree when they are in such different segments. Now if we were talking about TV's 46" and over, I would agree that anybody that buys one that is not 1080p is getting junk, but they still sell.

960x640 seems to work fine, too.

On an iPhone. But on a 15.6" display? Maybe not so much.

Weren't you referencing an 11" MBA as well? If you feel a 15" display with the same res as the 11" doesn't cut it, what about the comparison between a 10" and 11" with such disparate resolutions?

Umm, my new 13" MBA is 1440x900 - MUCH better than the 15" screens on PC laptops.

You're kidding, right? There's plenty of laptops in that range? Many even less expensive. Some not very good, some surprisingly capable given the prices.

Probably more like twice the price of an "average" 15" PC Laptop. If the screen resolution were the only superior attribute, it would be silly to pay so much more.
Do you think that's the case?

I can't tell, space-time did not mention a model or provide a link. Some laptops are crap, but on the other hand Apple laptops have sadly anemic GPU's and extremely limited configuration options compared to other models in their price range.

So the AMD Radeon HD 6750M and AMD Radeon HD 6770M (1 GB) are anemic? I must be really out of the loop...

[www.anandtech.com] The 6770M is likely off the bottom of the chart at about 55% the performance of the 6970M.

Yes, the discussion was about the MBA versus an unnamed model, sorry for the sidetracking. The MBA is the only Apple portable that does not have a good competitor. When it came out, all the other manufacturers were moaning that they would not be able to beat it on price for several months. My point is, comparing it to anything that is not within $50 is kind of unfair. Your new BMW 1 Series M has a nicer Nav screen than the Chevy Aveo, yes, I get it.

Let's get back to talking about products that are (ostensibly) in the same class here, i.e. MacBook Air and the new PC-market "ultrabooks":

Intel gives $100 ultrabook subsidy, delays Atom due to iPad
"Intel is giving Windows-based ultrabook makers a $100 discount to help them try to undercut Apple on price."

Imagine that...
