Getting Fasting Blood Work Tomorrow - How Many Hours Fasting Before?
Posted by: Rick-o
Date: December 20, 2011 12:57PM
Getting a routine blood check tomorrow morning and I'm getting conflicting info as to how long to fast before the bloodletting.

What are your thoughts? Does it vary by what tests are being done with the blood?

They always tell me not to eat or drink anything after midnight.

Follow your doctor's orders. If they are unclear, request clarification.

Yep, I've heard that, and another person said 17 hours, while another said 12 hours.

Several doctors in this office, with a separate lab doing the major blood draws. My doctor and the lab said two different numbers.

They tell me not to eat anything after midnight and my appt. is at 8, so that's 8 hours. Sometimes they tell me not to eat after 10. Which I usually don't anyway. It's the not eating breakfast that kills me.

I've always been told 12 hours.

The Lab would probably have the most accurate advice.

Our doctor's office takes the samples between 8 and 8:30 AM and says eat or drink nothing but water after midnight.

I stand by my advice. It seems that you need to request clarification.

while sleepwalking apprehensively awaiting the test, get up at 4AM and eat a big, gooey, double chili cheeseburger w/ spicy coated curly fries, and a chocolate shake w/ whipped cream, which of course you won't remember *wink, wink* and you should be fine, regardless of the doc's or lab's fasting requirement...

seriously though, good luck w/ the test, just don't think about food; research some toys, cars, computers, cameras, sitcoms, anything to take your mind off food.

Between 8-12 hrs is the recommended time around here. Just had mine done last week.

Yep, and I treat myself to a restaurant breakfast in the morning right after the blood draw.

I can go without the food OK. Caffeine is a different story.

Depends on what they're checking for, so yes, get clarification.

Other than hunger, there should be no harm in just fasting for the longest of all of the conflicting advice.

I say you should go for extra credit...24 hrs.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Rick,

Yes. It does vary, depending on the type of blood test. For some, you don't need to fast at all. Seriously, though, if you have to ask us for this advice, then both the doctor's office and lab have done you a disservice. The amount of time you should fast prior to bloodwork isn't rocket science. They should be able to give you an exact time. If it's still feasible, call the doctor back and inform him/her of what the lab told you, ask for clarification and then follow his advice.

Considering it's after 5:30 here in NY and, if you were here, it'd be too late to contact the doctor and ask him/her the proper time, I'd be inclined to take the earliest time the night before and stick with it. So, if the lab said no eating after 11:00 pm the night before the test and the doctor said midnight, go with the lab's time.

In reality, if you're like me, you're probably not going to eat or drink anything after 10:00 anyway, so it should be a non-issue.

Basically the same advice I offered, except for using a lot more words.

N-OS,

True but I gave a well deserved jab to both the doctor and the lab for giving conflicting advice. smiling smiley

Hey, thanks for all the comments, guys. It is appreciated. It's not really my doc or lab tech that is at fault. I had this same test about six months ago and I vaguely remember the doc saying nothing after midnight (I didn't think to ask when it was scheduled this time). When that test came up, I was chatting with the lab tech and she said 12 hours for most tests, but she also said some doctors insist that the fast should be 17 hours. I guess I should be more on top of things when I see the doc, but since before this year, I haven't been to a doctor in at least five years prior. I guess I'm a little rusty on asking the right questions. nuts smiley

At any rate, my bloodletting is set for 10 am, and it will probably be another 20 minutes before the blood is drawn, and I started the fast at 7:30 pm this evening. That will be close to 15 hrs. so we'll see if that's enough.

Thanks again for the input! thumbs up
