Selling old iPhone, do I leave the SIM card in?
Posted by: tahoedrew

I'm selling my old iPhone 3GS. If I leave the SIM card in, does it contain personal data?

Should I just remove the SIM and let the buyer worry about acquiring a new SIM card when they activate it?

Thanks!

How much are you selling it for? Is it Verizon or ATT?

I'm asking $150 as I listed it last night and need to sell it before I leave for 3 weeks in New York City tomorrow morning.

Wailer, if you still want it DM me but the exchange needs to happen FAST!

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for asking this - was just wondering the same thing :-)

What do you do with old AT&T SIM cards? What info is actually stored on them?

Does anything else need to be done with iPhones before selling them, beyond deleting all data and removing the SIM? There's no sort of "securely delete all data" option is there?

I'm looking for VZ. Thanks for the info though! Seems like a good price and you'll have no problem selling.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't say "securely delete", but there's an option on the iPhone itself, in Settings somewhere, to reset to factory defaults, or erase this phone - something like that. So, before pulling the SIM card, do that. Then take out the SIM card and sell.

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings - it'll then ask you to confirm at least two times. It wipes everything clean, deletes all your data and totally resets as if it were a brand new phone from Apple and you go thru all the initial setup.

Thanks for the info - wonder how easy it would be to recover personal info from a phone that has been erased this way. Not super paranoid, just curious smiling smiley

How does the "bug" in iOS5 using iMessager and the messages being available on multiple devices (even if wiped) play into this? Is this still an issue or has it been resolved?

Thanks. I know it's not the exactly related to the original question but thought it tied in somewhat.

To tag along on this topic, I'm planning on selling my wife's 3GS, but the battery is clearly not what it used to be. Not sure how much this will affect the value, but isn't this to be expected in a two year old phone? What's the best way to disclose this without scaring off buyers? It is otherwise in great condition. Do 3GS buyers expect to have to replace the battery?

Permanently erase data from your iPhone before sell with iPhone Data Eraser. Please completely delete all your data and personal information safely before selling your iPhone.
The most secure way is using professional third-party software like iPhone Data Eraser, which is a reliable and effective tool to smash everything on your iPhone, including contacts, messages, photos, videos, apps, account info, passwords, photos and other personal data.
