just how bad is MacKeeper?

never even tried it but it shows up all the time when I do a speed test; today it's on front page at dealmac

so how bad is it? I can see how some PC switchers used to run all these optimizations on their PeeCees might be tempted to install MacKeeper once they switch to Mac. I know it's not necessary, but does it hurt? I am tempted to install it on an external hard drive just to see what it does. Then I nuke and pave to get rid of it smiling smiley

it's very, very bad

yes, it hurts

please do install it and tell us how it goes. I've gotten a few calls on it. Pretty much takes a sound computer and turns it into a mess.

You need to install it on a used computer - one thing that it does is 'prune' files and does a real hack job as I understand it. So you need to have a real world hard drive with real world apps with real prefs that can be screwed up to really see all that might happen.

'You ever seen one of those junkyard cars made with parts from dozens of different cars spanning decades of technology? You see it run and you're like, "DAMN!" because it's astonishing that the thing runs at all.

That's MacKeeper.

They ripped off code from all over, stuck it together with spit and bubble gum and somehow it runs.

LOL, when I have some spare time I'll give it a try, of course on a drive that I plan to nuke anyway

Fascinating, truly.

Code that bad, that weird, that Oh By The Way could impact the OS or user account and you're "cool" with installing the app on another drive, as if that protects you against whatever?

Well, as long as no other drives are hooked up to his Mac at the time, he should be okay. But, not something I would want to take the time and trouble to experiment with.

I have had two clients install it and then have to pay me several hundred dollars in consulting fees to fix the mess they made tinkering around with MacKeeper. Job security is how I view it, sad but it is that bad.

ANY company that uses ads like they do - "the word is NO". Not on external, nothing.

I wish we could somehow shame all the sites that run ads for them to take 'em down. It's awful. I keep telling my clients: they've spent all their money on marketing, and had a couple monkeys come up with the code...
