PRAM battery for 15" PB G4

I am looking for a PRAM battery for my 7 year old powerbook G4 model A1106

[www.ifixit.com], they want $40 for a USED battery

[www.welovemacs.com], they ask $80 for a REFURBISHED unit

[www.ifixit.com] here it's only $25 but I would have to do some soldering (battery only). At least it's NEW and IN STOCK

I didn't realize a little coin battery can be so expensive. I guess the most reasonable approach is to buy the cell and solder it myself. Unless there is a source for complete assembly for about $20-25 that I missed when I searched.

no, thanks. This one is RECHARGEABLE, LIR3032, but you know what, I just realized maybe I should search for "LIR3032" rather than by Apple part number.

Thanks

i've got 2 old g4 macbooks with the same kernel panics that were a common problem with these laps.

pisses me off.

isn't there a hack/fix for this? would like to give them to friends in need, but not as unstable machines. if you have a resource for a fix, would appreciate it.

I bought that same iFixit battery last summer for a Titanium G4 PB. Had to cut a bit off one of the tabs with a wire cutter, as it was longer than would fit, but otherwise was perfect. The soldering was very easy. Works like a charm. Bought a couple of their spudgers too, which made the whole job easier.

What have you done to diagnose the kernel panics. They could be from a variety of different problems. First thing I'd suggest is disk utility verify and repair permissions. Second thing would be to run the apple hardware test. I don't think there's a particular kernel panic problem that is common with g4 apple laptops. Kernel panics in general can often be traced to bad RAM.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

it's a hardware issue. i remember all the complaints on this model.

people would stack padding on the processor or whatever. too late for apple to care. no big deal.

just these would be good machines for people in need. suppose i'll have to crack the case. but these were a bitch to open.

Replace the board along with the battery. And get new, not refurbished.

Those boards have limited lives. They tend to burn out right around the time that the battery goes.

Better to start fresh if you're going to invest time and money on the project.
