OK, so what do Lion users do without iDVD?

Brother and his school teacher buddies have been doing end-of-year slide shows using iDVD -- but now that several of them have upped to newer Macs and Lion -- iDVD is now gone

It looks like iPhoto 11 has some expanded slide show features... but Im only running 09.

Or is there something better? A replacement?

iDVD doesn't install under Lion? Can't they just pop in their iLife disc and install it on the new machine?

It does not come with those machines and the installer is not there on the restore media. IIRC even if you do install it, it does not work correctly.

Make a couple of phone calls.

iDVD is a “Must Have". (Yes, it should be included.)

Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.

Many people report that by asking here: [www.apple.com]

or here: [www.apple.com]

they got a free copy of iDVD.

Have you checked to see if it's available for download, either from Apple's web site or from the Mac App Store?

It seems that Apple has redefined what iLife 11 consists of, without changing it's name.

One a recent Mac purchase with Lion pre-installed, all that the outer box says is "Preinstalled Mac OS X and iLife".

Now that I think about it, that's pretty much the justification Apple provided for killing iDVD: Because the vast majority of home movies are now hosted online, the need to be able to create DVD copies of such movies no longer exists.

iDVD worked fine on Lion for me just recently. I burned an iPhoto slide show and made a short iMovie (latest iLife for both apps) that iDVD handled well.

So if it's gone, and I have need of making a DVD for folks who are less than computer/interwebs savvy (insert "Parents" here), what are my current alternatives to the now absent iDVD if I get a new mac with ML? They can't be giving out free iDVDs forever...

Toast... the old standby.

Pricey though for what it does nowadays, you can get more for less but not in a single package.

Lots of ways to do automatic, instant slideshows now. Beyond just plugging in your Mac, iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and running a slideshow from there, you can do it wirelessly with Apple TV.

Apple knows what you need. If the company decides you don't need it, you don't need it.

sometimes when you rent or visit a vacation home, there's no wifi, but there is a DVD player.

optical media's not dead to everyone yet.

Thanks all.

They pass these DVDs out to the parents -- from what I gather they are pretty large -- not really host-able.

I do that as well for my daughter's summer camp. We create a slideshow, and add pictures to the DVD for all parents to enjoy. Not everyone has or wants or can afford the latest Apple eye-candy. For Apple to remove a perfectly usable tool makes little sense and seems arrogant.

Not to be too contradictory, Sam, but given that Apple provided iDVD with every Mac for FREE, it's a little arrogant to presume that Apple is obligated to continue to provide the software.
