Last Oct, I noticed 2 large charges to my AmEx card and I called their fraud dept. While on the line w/ them, we went back over the last six months and found 2 more charges from the same source but they were very small amounts. AmEx very quickly refunded all of the charges [about $3000] and reissued us new cards.

Today, I get a notice from the District Attorney of Las Vegas naming me as a witness in a fraud case. I do a quick check on the net and find out that the names on the letterhead and phone numbers all match my search results so I decide to call them. At first, I had forgotten about the credit card problem; then, it dawned on me. They say that this was just a notification and that if I am needed for a court appearance, I will be compensated for it.

Has this ever happened to anyone here? I've never been to Vegas and I don't really want to go there ;->

if they compensate you for the trip, go to testify and put the bastard in Jail

then spend your compensation at the casinos

Sad to that unless this guy has a significant criminal past he will be walking out of jail and doing this again
in very short order. However if you go to L.V. bring a high calibre weapon pop a few caps in his knees and a%$ he will likely remember this occasion and get the full experience of stealing.

Out of jail? He's probably not been IN jail yet... except for a quick "book and release" and given a piece of paper with a court date on it... which he'll probably ignore.

When the badguys that stole my ID many years ago were caught, my presence wasn't needed at the trial.

Vegas law enforcement must love being in Vegas, because they fly in witnesses and put them up for a couple nights and it only costs them a couple hundred bucks.

The bad guys who stole my ID a couple years ago were never found to the best of my knowledge, and I'm sure it was an inside job at Best Buy since they knew exactly how much they could charge on my active account to avoid going over the limit (I'd bought an expansive monitor there and opened a credit account to get 12 months at no interest - they waited until there was one payment left and then charged within a couple dollars of the credit limit, just under $4000). It took me the better part of a year fighting with BB to get the charge removed from my account.

Anyway, I'm glad at least one crook was caught!

Yeah, a few years ago, somebody who WORKED for American Ex tried to use my card!

It's a long story, but getting my badguys required many, many hours of work on my part since the cops refused to touch the case until I was able to prove who the badguys were. And even then, they probably only took the case because the guy was on probation and a conviction was a 100% certainty.

this was nearly 10 years ago. i was staying with friend from high school that came home and essentially announce a round of @#$%& for all his friends (did i mention he has problems? I was just discovering this at the time). he had taken a credit card from a customer at work. he worked as a waiter. another friend and i convinced him to go to sleep. he pretended to and went to a "massage" parlor and got "the works". he even showed his state id. the next morning he called me looking for reassurance that it would be okay. he didn't really get it from me.

he was fired from the job a short while later but i went in to talk to his boss - she was just putting him out there to do it again. she didn't like the conversation. unsurprising in retrospect but i'm glad i at least made her uncomfortable.

i tried to call VISA about it but they explained to me that only the issuer of the bank would be interested.

Its my guess that the massage parlor considers this a part of doing business.
