If someone is out of the country (in this case, on a cruise), and they are in the Caribbean on one of the islands with wi-fi nearby, can you use iMessage to communicate free of any kind of international roaming charges? I know Apple is circumventing phone carriers in general but didn't know exactly how it'd work. Thanks.

Yep. If you send it over WiFi it will be free. I am planning on doing that exact same thing with my daughter next week.

Yes---iMessage from iOS5 device to iOS5 device is free over the internet---think of it like email over the internet

There are other apps like TextFree Unlimited that do the same to other non iOS5 phones over the internet.

Yep, been able to do the same thing for years using iChat - free and can see each other - video chatting, aka, talking as on a phone... Cannot beat free from all over the world. Wifi, wifi, that is. I am almost to the point of thinking I will never need an iPhone, etc., because with an iPod touch and wifi ubiquitous as it is, hey, it works great. Well, I don't know if I would want to do much talking over wifi at McDonald's, StarBucks, etc., but hotel room is fine.

Just make sure they are connecting via WiFi and not the phone!

Same with FaceTime - over wifi, no fee.
