Wireless router recommendations please...

I'm in desperate need of a new wireless router for my house. I have a Buffalo that just won't keep a connection with my modem (I constantly have to go unplug and re-plug the cords).

I'd like something that could work up to a couple hundred feet without breaking the bank. We have an outdoor apartment that our college-age daughter lives in (with aluminum roof and siding), and our mom lives in a small house on our property (I'd love for her to pick it up - right now she can from her porch).

We have 2 iMacs, a pc laptop (shameful I know, but it's my college dd's), 2 iPads and 5 iPhones that regularly connect (though not all at once). I have satellite internet as it's my only option. I definitely want something that will keep my service at its top speed, or boost it if that's a possibility.

Any suggestions?

thats asking for a lot so i'll simply respond with the standard options

- Apple Airport Extreme if you think the slight increase in price is worth the increased ease of use.

- Netgear WNDR-3700 [www.amazon.com] - if you like dd-wrt/tomato (you're a bit of a nerd)

Gee, sorry for asking. I didn't realize I needed to be on the forums all the time in order to ask questions when I need help.

In the Linksys, is there a noticeable difference in the E1500, E2500 and E3200?

Actually, I'm a woman, have been on the boards a while, do get on and read when new things come out just to get input, but don't often have a need to post.

Right now I am in dire need of a new router! I always look to this forum for "expert" opinions regarding all things Mac!

if you scroll down you'll see a feature comparison. the 3200 looks very good. it should have the best range of the three you listed

I hope that the people that know what they are talking about come here and give you some actual mac help. But I don't know if there is agreement on the router recommendation. I bought an airport extreme last year though to upgrade my old original base station. I decided I didn't want to have to deal with configuring and updating and maintaining a 3rd party router. I like being able to configure it using my ipad. whether that would be worth the money for you is not at all clear, since other 3rd party routers can do similar things for less.

But I would suggest you think about extending your network. You may have trouble with any setup getting the range you need. So having the option to add something like an airport express to easily extend the network (in either apartment) would be nice. Again, that is avail in a 3rd party option; again for me, I can't stand configuring anything that smells like a windows set up wifi utility (I do connect one windows computer with wifi adapter, and so do have to periodically deal with that). I have this naive belief that if I wanted more range I could pick up a refurb express and plug that in and have it running in minutes.

Why let one comment derail the thread?
I really like my Asus RT-N12 but it looks like it's been discontinued.

When I woke up to a bad router a couple of months ago, I drove to Walmart and got a Netgear N150 for something around $35-40. It hooked right in with the MacBook. I've got it at one end of the house and have no trouble getting a signal anywhere in the house including the basement as well as outside, about 80 feet away at the other end of the house. I'm perfectly happy.

the concern is the outbuilding with aluminum siding is essentially a Faraday cage. It shields radio waves.

If trying to get through the aluminum is too much to ask, I'll just give up on that idea. Some of this other stuff is kind of confusing - I'm a simple kinda gal so what is fairly easy, but still good.
