am I too old to learn to swim...?
Posted by: space-time

I am ~40 and I never had any kind of swimming lessons. I kind of learned on my own while hanging out with buddies at a lake when I was a teenager, and then I had a friend about 6-7 year ago trying to teach me to swim better but he had a hard time with me.

I can float on my back, I can swim across the pool and back (not sure how long is it), but I am swimming very slowly, and because the way I swim is very ineffective, I also get tired very quickly.

I take my son to swimming lessons every week and I am thinking to ask if they have an adult class for people like me.

My aunt learned to swim when she was 70.

We all swim, it's almost innate. You can learn to swim better. Think of it that way.

I'm taking a swimming class now, and I've got over 10 years on you. It's amazing how much there is to improve even if you think you know how to swim. I swam 3/4 of a mile freestyle yesterday.

Rather than swimming lessons, think of it as having a swim coach or trainer. Sounds cooler!

It's on my list of things to do and I'm way past 40. Where I grew up, "going swimming" meant opening up the fire hydrant. smiling smiley

Go for it!

I took swimming lessons summers through ages 9 to 11 but never really learned how to relax my body so that it had low resistance. I got a little better when I took snorkeling lessons.

At this point I think my response is probably not needed, but I have a friend who took lessons who was older than you are. She did very well.

You're never too old to learn to swim! Go for it...

I used to teach swimming at the local pond and the adult class was the easiest to teach because they were highly motivated (unlike the kids who "had to"winking smiley Most of them were moms that wanted to keep up with the kids.

It does help to have an instructor that's used to teaching adults - different way of learning than kids plus there are the fears we have as adults that you don't have as a kid.

Plus it's a great way to stay fit without pounding any joints.

I took swim lessons as a kid, was even on the swim team for a short while. I am a certified SCUBA diver with almost 70 dives, and I snorkel frequently. But my freestyle swimming sucks. I like to stroke br... uh, I mean I like the breast stroke though. When I swim at the Y, I usually do the breast stroke. I'm a lot slower than all the other swimmers, but I can do it continuously for about 45 minutes without having to stop every few laps. If I do freestyle, I have to stop after 2 or 3 laps to catch my breath.

I say go for it. I see people swimming at the Y who are in their 70s and 80s. It's great exercise.
