Is it just me or is this way over priced with or without the lens?

It is currently the only full frame 6 frames per second shooting camera on the market with 22mp for $3500. Nikon D800 cost less and has more mp but a slower 4fps.

If I were to buy a system today based on 1 camera, I would pick the 5d III over the D800 for what I shoot. Most people don't need 6fps shooting. I don't think D800 36mp has it's drawbacks for image quality. More mp is not always better. If you shoot below ISO 3200 then it isn't an issue.

That being said, it would be nice if the prices were lower but the reality is Canon and Nikon are the two big dogs, Sony is too busy working on mirrorless cameras and minor model improvements on a yearly basis with minimal lens development for their Alpha line. Sony is also under tremendous financial pressure due to billions in losses and so they keep jacking up their prices.

It is the world of limited competition and the prices suck.

I am aware that Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic are out there but they don't have offerings in the full frame 35mm sensor segment.

I'm just comparing the price increase compared to my Mark II.

The 1DX AF system in the 5D3 is probably the biggest upgrade IMO. You also get more frames per second and and extra "I".

Depends on what you shoot. The MarkII AF system is.... not good. Fine if you're shooting architectural or landscape, or studio portraits. Once you throw action into the mix it becomes very hard to manage. At that point your next Canon option is the 1Dm4 but you lose FF. Now at least there's a middle ground.

Initially at least, I don't see the Mark III as the Mark II replacement, rather, it fills a hole in Canon's product lineup. 18 months down the road, as Mark III adoption ticks up, they can move more manufacturing to Mark III and drop the price by $500, and at that point EOL the Mark II. Until that point though I don't see hoards of people ditching their Mark II's to upgrade.

The 5D mark 2 AF is completely useless for fast moving action with shallow apertures. 1D IV prices are still pretty high. At 6fps and full frame for $3500 and more advanced AF than a 1D Mark IV, it is a good value. Closest competitor right now is the Nikon D800 but test results I am seeing indicate that ISO 1600 and 3200 are cleaner on the Canon 5D Mark III. The D800 may have more megapixels but it comes at a price.

What I would love to see is a Canon 5D 3 file up sampled from a raw file to 36mp and compare to a D800 at ISO 800, 1600, 3200. My guess is an upscaled 5d3 image would beat the D800.

The 5D3 may cost $500 more than a D800 but the D800 vertical grip is $100 more than the 5D3 and offers no extra functionality beyond it's counterpart.

Cal B&H and ask them if you can get a B and a J with that price.

It's not just you; the general consensus is it's priced about $500 too high. Not everyone of course but the overall consensus. What's really bad is the vertical grip is about twice price of the one for the Mark II.

Nice camera, though.

Nice camera, though.

They are charging more for the vertical grip but it is $350. They added more buttons and more weather sealing to it. Nikon did the same but jacked the price of the D800 vertical grip to $450.

Canon said the 5DIII grip price is $490. I see B&H has it listed for $349. Maybe Canon caved a little to the price outrage?

Anyway, the grip isn't available yet so who knows what the real price will be when it's available.

The 5d3 with 22mp and 6fps is a better all around camera to me than the Nikon D800. WIth the vertical grips I think the canon 5D3 is a better overall value.
