I'm trying to decide between getting Applecare+ or getting the Squaretrade iPad warranty. Right now a 3 year Squaretrade is $109 with a coupon while Applecare is $99.

Plusses:

Applecare+:
Convenience of going to an Apple Store
2 damage incidents with a $50 deductible each time
Usually a replacement iPad (or so I understand)

Squaretrade:
3 years available
unlimited incidents up to iPad value with a 50 deductible each time (I believe)

Negatives:

Applecare:
Only two incidents in a 2 year time period.

Squaretrade:
Repair that may not be as well done.
Need to send away iPad.

I would just go with AppleCare+ mainly for the plusses you listed.

I'm not too concerned about AppleCare+ only being two years b/c most likely you would get the itch to upgrade to the latest and greatest iPad by that time anyway.

Also, check how easy or not it is to transfer either warranty. I know AppleCare in general travels with the serial number so if you sell the iPad during the warranty period, you may not need to go through the hassle of officially transferring the warranty to the new owner.

I'll throw out Safeware as another choice...
They cover theft, which neither Applecare nor Squaretrade cover.

That reminds me... I'm going to have to see when I expire, and decide if I'm going to renew.

I have a SquareTrade warranty and I love it. My daughter dropped my iPad and the screen had cracks. I called SquareTrade, they told me to take it to Apple, Apple fixed it and SquareTrade reimbursed me. Got the best of both worlds with SquareTrade.

I'm a big fan of Squaretrade, but if the $50 deductible applies to what would be normal warranty repairs (and the way it reads, it would), then no way.

None of the above.

My strategy:

1) Buy on Amex which doubles my warranty and accidental breakage for an initial period.
2) Get a decent case to protect against drops
3) Use the $100 savings toward an annual upgrade after selling the old model.

Gareth, when I took the iPad in to the apple store to be fixed they didn't charge me the deductible.

In the market too, would have bought AC if I was aware I had to go the Apple store after the fact.

Also, I thought I read squaretrade allows you to have the item fixed from apple and they will reimburse you--or other repair center.

1) Buy on Amex which doubles my warranty and accidental breakage for an initial period.

To clarify, when using Amex, the Amex Purchase Protection protects against theft, and accidental damage, and vandalism up to $1000 for 90Days. The 1 year Apple warranty (no theft, no accidental damage) is doubled to 2 years.
