Got rid of that linen background

I just looked up how to replace the Lion linen pattern, and then replaced it with one I like better.

Definitely an improvement.

I definitely like the linen, not that it wouldn't be changed somewhere down the road, but I really don't like the iCal calendar.

I never noticed the linen until allowing software update to do its thing today. Apart from being compelled to find out if a magic eraser was the right thing to use to clean the screen, I found it pleasing...

I really hate that fake "torn of sheet month" look on calendar. The whole design is very cheesy and un-apple.

Not having used Lion until recently, the background of the login screen seems very unprofessional. Reminds me of the Classic OS days.

Reminds me of the Classic OS days.

That's exactly what I find comforting about it.

Part of my frustration is I work with a bunch of computer geeks who think Macs are for idiots. I have one for a few tasks that wont work on Windows. Now they're having to learn those tasks, and having the childish background only provides more evidence that Macs aren't for professionals.

Pimp My Screen is a great wallpaper changer for iOS. Can't remember just now if it will also swap out the linen background for something else, but I believe it does.

It is what it is.

Anyone who still has that attitude in this day and age is someone whose opinion I wouldn't trust on anything technical.
The geekiest people I know these days either use Macs daily or want to.

You don't live in Seattle :/

But yes, my current team is one of the reasons I have a question for new teams I talk with: "Please complete this sentence: Mac users are ______"

Though at the last pace I didn't ask it 'cause everyone had MBPs.

Isn't that sort of thing kind of 1998?

Interesting times. I find myself moving further away from Apple for all my computing needs. Platform agnosticism is certainly lighter on my wallet.

Of course, my statement is not meant to suggest people should automatically scoff at Apple devices as productivity tools. That would be absurd. Choice is great. I'm glad I have Macs and iOS devices as an option, even if I am increasingly turning to alternatives for my personal gear.

choice is great, i do agree.

some people need or want to get 'under the hood' with an OS; others, like my parents, should not be mucking about in Terminal.

a computer is a tool - what you do with it depends on what kind you need. if you're using one for the majority of your waking hours, it should be the best match it can be.

That's very interesting. I find myself moving in the opposite direction, for usability and interoperability advantages.

For example, when my in-laws were in town and sitting around bored, I was able to show them home movies of their grandkids that I had taken on my phone, and had it automatically pushed to the apple tv2 for large screen viewing. It just worked. No setup required.

That's just one example but I've found that the benefit to the Apple ecosystem far outweighs the setup and compatibility penalties I would have to pay if I had multiple different hardware components running multiple different operating systems. I'm sure that it's technically feasible to push video wirelessly from an Android phone for example, to an XBOX360 - but how much of my life do I really want to invest figuring out the easiest way to do that? iPhone plus apple tv = it just works. That's worth the tiny price premium to me.
