It's a pity that this lady was injured though. Most people do recognize that tables filled with iOS goodness would probably be protected from the elements thought. There are many other shops with clear glass fronts.

One hopes she does not win, and all Glass doors have to be covered with 'idiot' stickers that act as lawyer repellent.

Apple wants to be cool and modern and have the type of architecture that would appeal to the tech crowd, but on the other hand, they have to appreciate the danger that this high-tech modern architecture poses to some people.

Yes, people who don't pay attention to where they are going. People will sue over anything.

Same thing happened to me at the building where we were storing office furniture after closing our medical practice. Next to an inner door is a full-length glass panel ('light'). I was looking past the entryway trying to see a customer, whom I was talking to on a cell phone, and I walked smack into the glass. Fortunately it was laminated (safety) glass, so it cracked in circles where my knee it it, but did not shatter. Banged my nose, too.

Cell phones can be distracting, even to walkers!

Cost me $500 to replace the glass.

Here's hoping Apple uses some of it's $100 billion to swamp her attorney into submission. Pay her actual, verified, legitimate medical expenses and give her a $25 itunes card. This is obviously an attorney looking for a juicy settlement.

Besides at 83, it's not like she will be a longtime customer

From a different perspective ...

A co-worker was returning to the office one winter's day carrying two bottles of liquor. He slipped on some ice in the parking lot, and he cut his hands on the broken glass when the bottles broke.

The hospital stitched him up, and he was back at work in a few hours.

The building owner's lawyers were on the phone the next day to get him to settle. After protesting that he, himself, was entirely at fault here and had no intention of suing, the money quote was

"I'll settle for $1,000"

Most Apple Stores have one or two of its 40+ 'standing around' workers opening up the doors in/our anyhow (at least most of the time), so Apple will likely just make sure this is the case the majority of the time.

Hi everyone,

I've seen people walk into the patio door of their own home. Why not a glass door or wall at an Apple Store? Easily within the realm of possibility. Same goes for the injuries.

One thing I do question is Fritz's comment. I think it's wrong to make assumptions about the woman just because she goes to that particular store. Sure, the Apple Store may be in the "Miracle Mile" mall in Manhasset. The vast majority of the stores in that shopping center are luxury and high end but people from all over the place go there for the Apple Store.

It's much easier to deal with than the other Nassau County store which is in the Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City. Heck, I avoid the one in the mall like the plague! It's that insane over there.

That's a pretty mean-spirited remark.

Whether her lawsuit has merit or not, I can't say. People do walk into glass doors & walls fairly often so I'm inclined to think this isn't as outrageous as many other lawsuits. And this statement is entirely true about Apple:

“The stereotypical Apple customer is a Gen-Y person or a teenager or a college student, but they have to realize that the elderly generation are their customers, too”

I walked into a screen door once at night where I couldn't see there was a screen. Certainly not as painful as walking into glass I imagine, but equally as shocking and embarrassing.

Geez - I've banged into my glass patio doors a couple times in the 11 years I've owned this house. I wonder if I could find a lawyer who would let me sue myself for being dumb. Sorry about her nose though. So far all I've suffered is a need to clean the window of nose oil afterwards. Wonder if Apple considered countersuing for the cleanup work?

The complainant in the MickyD lawsuit suffered third degree burns, requiring numerous skin grafts and 8 days of hospitalization. Although the popular press has spun it otherwise, this was NOT a frivolous lawsuit.

I think building owners and architects have a responsibility to watch out for obvious hazards. Large plate-glass doors and adjacent panes (like the one I walked into) are hazards that are easily ameliorated by simple (yet still aesthetically-appealing) measures, like a stylish bar midway across the glass.

You don't have to be 83 years old to have poor eyesight. Apple would never put a step down right at the door, or some other land mine for the inattentive. IMO Apple bears some responsibility for the incident, though obviously not a million dollars worth. That's clearly just a starting point. They should be magnanimous, offer to pay the lady's medical bills, give her a free iPad, and maybe $10 grand cash, and send her and a companion on a nice vacation to the Caribbean.

Then they should make sure no one will walk into a glass door at an Apple Store again.

geez, gray, just because the shoe *almost* fits, is no reason to get your knickers in a twist...! Of course I have no regard for women or old people; especially old women that don't have enough sense to not walk into things they're supposed to only look through. Take a chill pill; the "condescending" descriptors were only there to emphasize the frivolity of the situation... both in the original post, and now in this one (the forum readers just gotta have fun).
I'm not saying old people don't have the right to go out, but if there's a chance they're gonna do a face plant into a window, they oughta have somebody with 'em to help out so that doesn't happen; and if they don't, they oughta take responsibility for where they plant their face, without expecting the window's owner to pay for their mishap.
