Anyone see The Hunger Games? Is it as good as I have heard it is?

I have heard The Hunger Games is very good, but I know nothing about the book it is based on. Anyone here like to recommend it?

I liked the book and enjoyed the movie.

If you haven't read the book, it might be a different experience as some scenes are clearly setups for the next two movies. Those scenes are much better explained in the books.

Ed Morrissey at HotAir pans it:

. . . The audience with whom I saw this was largely composed of teenagers, and they seemed to enjoy the film a lot more than I did, so take that into consideration. It’s rated PG-13, which surprised me a little with the occasionally graphic violence in the film. It’s far too intense for children, but teenagers would probably handle it with little difficulty. The odds may be with them to find this enjoyable, but anyone older will have seen all of this before, and done better.

Younger set votes the movie an A, older an A-

I liked it more than other blockbusters like Avatar.

But yes, you will probably have a ton of teenagers in the theater texting.

The guy who recommended it to me was over 60, so it must appeal to some adults. grinning smiley

definitely better than Avatar and a host of other cheesy Hollywooden retreads.

reminded me at times of The Fifth Element, plus bits of other dystopian future stories such as THX-1138.

the teen romance angle is what's getting the hormonal crowds in a tizzy.

I thought it was a good flick and that it was mostly enjoyable. I was, however, put off by the unbelievability of a chase scene.

My wife and I saw it last night. I am not over 60 but for me to stay awake in a 2.5 hr movie means it must be good. I guess it is considered a teen story. My wife has read the books and there are many set ups that I wasn't aware of but still a solid flick. B plus.
Oh, and I would say at least 6 months to Redbox. John Carter, however should be showing up any day now.

I read the books, but have not seen the first movie yet. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the books (well, the 1st and 3rd ones, anyway- did not care for the 2nd one at all.) They are directed at teens and have a heavy subject matter but they are really quick reads.

I'd like to catch the movie on the big screen but knowing me and my track record with seeing movies, I'll probably see it when it hit DVD/download.

it's a pretty intense premise; also brings to mind The Lottery.

T-Bone Burnett (O Brother Where Art Thou) did the music, so that might interest people who are a fan of his.

I saw a movie of The Lottery as a freshman in college before I read the book. I thought I was going to throw up.

Yes, forgot to mention T-Bone Burnett score. Good solid acting with the best being by Jennifer Lawrence (Winterbone) and a decent showing by Woody Harrelson. Much better flick than most of the dreck that passes for entertainment (Twilight?).

Wasn't there an Arnold movie with the same or similar premise?

I saw it today. Considering the subject matter I was expecting a darker movie. I thought is was okay but some of the special effects and the love story kept it from being a really good movie.

Saw it last night and was pleasently surprized - script reasonably tight, acting reasonably good, special effects - soso; like why were those dog creatures so sssslllloooowwww? Don't think it will be a gangbuster like Twilight but I'm going to go get the books to read.
