Why don't I like salmon? I keep trying
Posted by: samintx
Date: March 27, 2012 06:57PM
During WWII we had salmon croquettes with cream peas and I loved it (canned salmon no ration points and about 25 cents a can). I know salmon is good for you but I almost want to heave when I eat it. Tonight I had seasoned cream chez wrapped in salmon and puff pastry. All I could do to eat half of it.

I have lime grilled salmon I pretty much swallow whole to finish the fillet. Fresh, fried or whatever...just isn't for me. Altho I can sanction raw salmon in sushi better than cooked.

But seriously salmon/fish not well cared for or prepared well can be nasty.

Dan is a blabber mouth. Now the secret it out. Thanks a lot. Cereally, bacon might be good, turkey bacon I'll try that and some of the other suggestions. I've never had a bad experience with salmon that I know of. My daughters love it.

I'm with you, Samintx- I've tried to like or at least tolerate salmon because I know it's good for me, but I just can't stand the taste of it. I have, however, found smoked salmon to be slightly less repugnant than other varieties, especially when each piece is buried under a pile of capers.

Hey, I live in Seattle. We have available some of the best salmon on the planet. But even I sometimes have issues with some salmon depending on how its cooked, or seasoned, or whatever. Sometimes it's a crapshoot.

I can tell you that at my sportsman's club/shooting range when we do impromptu fish fry nights, the little breaded salmon nuggets that get cajun seasoning are like crack-sprinkled salmon flavored donut holes to me. When I drive p to the range, and there is a deep fryer going in the parking lot, I get all sweaty and excited. yeah, that tasty. Like crack I tell you.

I absolutely adore salmon croquettes. Why don't you try them with bacon bits sprinkled in the mix? So good that I actually dream about them when I haven't made any for a long time. BTW, if you use canned salmon, make sure it's red salmon. The pink salmon is pretty nasty.

I don't usually enjoy salmon. I think it might be genetic. Like the genes that code for hating broccoli or enjoying alcohol. It usually tastes kind of like fishy, bitter spoiled milk to me.

Every once in awhile, tho, I'll be sitting at a restaurant table, a waiter will walk past with a stinky salmon dish and suddenly I'll be okay with salmon just for that night.

Weird.

Childhood overexposure to foods definitely causes avoidance in an adult. I will only willingly each Zucchini if it's properly baked into bread, or sliced paper thin and fried so it's indistinguishable from bread. Much for the same reason.. it's all the damn garden seemed to grow for two years.

But I want to hurl when I think of eating mackerel.

My mom (divorced raising 7 kids) bought lots of canned mackerel. I hate it to this day.

It could be just that you don't like salmon. However, there is a lot of unfresh, bland variety, overcooked salmon in this world and it could be that the place you live doesn't have access to decent and well-cooked salmon. Like all fish, it is critical to have the freshest fish you can get, preferably wild king salmon (though there are one or two farmed varieties like Loch Duart that aren't too bad), and for it to not be overcooked. If you're getting salmon in a chain restaurant like Red Lobster or the like, that just ain't gonna happen. There are a lot of parts of the US where the fresh seafood is unobtainable and the skills for cooking it are not in evidence.

For the record, I loooooooove salmon (fresh, wild, properly cooked that is).

The absolute best piece of salmon I ever had was a wild king that I bought off the boat just after he pulled in. I went home and barbecued it immediately. Heaven on earth!

Here's my salmon story, slightly OT.

I was down at the coast with my former wife. Its about a 2 hour drive from home. As was our custom, we stopped before heading back and got some smoked salmon and a few other things to snack on while we drove back. Both of us were big fans of the local salmon, in all its various iterations.

Anyhow, about an hour into the drive back she turns to me a says, "I don't feel right, my tongue feels fat." Of course I immediately attribute this to hypochondria. OK, let's just say there was a historical basis for this, and I said, "Oh, you're fine. We'll be home in a hour."

Another 5 minutes go by and she turns to me and says, "Ew thwenk ews gwethen woosh, mewh tronghwth uhss swoolenght!" Then her eyes roll back in her head and she sort of nods forward. Meantime, we're out in the middle of nowhere, about 15 minutes past McMinnville. I flip a uturn in the middle of the highway and floor it.

We get back to the outskirts of McMinnville in about 5 minutes and miraculously see one of those blue hospital signs. I do a 4 wheel slide into the ER driveway and carry her in, screaming, "She can't breathe!" OK, she was still breathing, but barely conscious. They gave her a shot of something that brought her around, watched her for a hour or so, then sent us on our way. She slept all the way back.

A couple weeks later she went in to an allergy clinic to get tested. When they gave her a teeny hit of salmon she had such an extreme reaction to it she had to lay down for a couple hours before she could leave. Strange, because up until the incident on the trip we had eaten salmon often, with no problems. From then on she's had to carry around one of those injection kits everywhere she goes.

being from Seattle I still don't like most Salmon.
I used to fish alot and if I caught it that day it could be pretty good.
these days my wife buys that farm raised colored Atlantic crap because it is Healthy for me. All I say is yuck.
I do seem to think that most of the store bought Sockey is pretty good.

I think it's fine not to like salmon. Until I moved to the Seattle and got the good stuff super fresh, I didn't care for it either.

Life is short, eat the healthy things (and occasional unhealthy things) that you enjoy and that make your taste buds smile.

Gawd I love Salmon I could eat it 8 daze a week . I like it smoked, sauteed, grilled and especially raw.
The key is fresh well cared for fish. Using a paper towel to dry the fish also is important before cooking it.

My dad loved fishing but only liked to eat smoked fish.

Naturally if salmon or seafood doesn't work for you choose something else *(:>*

All the suggestions here are really good, especially the grilling aspect.

It does really depend on preparation-- there's a sushi place here that also makes a mean salmon teriyaki. They know just how much to cook it-- not too much, not too little. Their salmon as sushi is also quite excellent.

My wife loves salmon and we have it once a week. I always use a rub to flavor the salmon and when I have time I like to smoke it. Having salmon every week does get a little tedious for me though so I will frequently add teriyaki to mine or put a little honey glaze on it.

I use the traeger salmon rub

and mix with their sweet rub
[www.traegergrills.com]

Btw, when I smoke the salmon I use my brand spanking new traeger grill.

Try cooking salmon with one aromatic spice... cilantro, celery, red bell pepper, any other kind of pepper... and just a splash of olive oil.

Don't like seafood. Never have. I don't hate it, either, but I never eat it. I agree that there must be a genetic aspect to it.

I do like cold shrimp with a good, spicy cocktail sauce, but the shrimp mainly serve as a vehicle to get the sauce to my mouth. Without the sauce - meh.

And lobster? I think people really like the butter, not the lobster!

And I like canned tuna. But I'm sure most seafood lovers would say that canned tuna is not seafood, so I am consistent there, at least. winking smiley

Fish tastes fishy. Some of it that I've had is good-fresh caught permit off the ragged Keys south of Turkey Point and put right on the grill-but that's it. There would be no shortage of some fish stocks in the world if it were up to me!

I can eat bumble bee solid white albacore packed in water in a gold can, but that's about it. If it smells looks or has the texture of cat food it's cat food. I'll eat it if I have to. I won't like it.

Fish is OK if it's not oily ( like flounder ) or Cod if it's a young one not caught after say May or June.
Scallops I used to pass on, but can eat if they are fresh.

My grandfather owned a fishing trawler so I ate lots and lots of all kinds of fish when I was a kid.
I got tired of it. I would dream of well done hamburgers........ :-)
I hated it then, didn't realize how lucky I was to have had so much really fresh fish until I was older.
Lucky and a little spoiled. Aged and spoiling fish really doesn't taste very good.
