Why Samsung Makes Retina Displays — But Not For Its Own Tablets

If you haven’t yet laid eyes on the new iPad’s screen, you must. “Sharp” doesn’t begin to describe Apple’s upgrade in display quality. But here’s the kicker: Samsung, a company firmly aligned with Android and one of Apple’s largest competitors in the mobile space, is manufacturing the new iPad’s flagship feature.

So, naturally, questions arise: Why are we seeing Retina displays in iPads but not in Samsung’s own Galaxy-branded tablets? Why would Samsung allow itself to be trumped by a mere customer?

Can't read the article (blocked site from work... silly, but true)...
I'm guessing they did the math, and decided selling to Apple (a GREAT BIG customer, placing GREAT BIG orders) would make them more money than putting them in their less-selling Galaxy tablets.

Haven't read the article, but the obvious answer would be that Samsung doesn't have a license to use the display in their own products.
They're merely contracted to build them, not use them themselves.

Example: You hire a printer to print 50,000 copies of your book so you can sell them.
The printer doesn't inherit the right to print another 50,000 and sell them themselves.

Business is business. Their only point is to gather as much money as they can possibly get. There are no motives beyond that.

I wish posters would be more careful to differentiate between their own words and quotations from linked articles.

I thought it was obvious that that is a quote from the article. Next time I'll use quotation marks for those that don't find it obvious.

For those who didn't (and don't) want to read the article, the answer is a business decision -

They chose to differentiate their tablets by using AMOLED screens and AMOLED can't do the resolution necessary for the retina display.

AMOLED is better for brightness and color saturation though.

besides, the guys making the tablets and phones are in a completely different business unit from the ones making the retina display screens. just because they're both owned by the same conglomerate doesn't mean they have to work together.

seems to me Apple invested ( a pretty good chunk of change) in a Samsung LCD assembly line a few years back with a guarantee on ( a quantity of ) the resultant production for imacs - it's not like they don't have start up money to make things happen.

Summary;

Samsung uses AMOLED on its products. Apple uses LCDs.

Question: Does Samsung make the Apple displays? From the article "Samsung recently spun off its unprofitable LCD business" So is the Apple stuff spun off, or is it part of a separate division "the profitable LCD business"?

More than that. The display business was separated and offcially began business as an autonomous, albeit still wholly-owned, corporation yesterday.

Apple has spread their cash around and ensured their place at the head of the table with many of the prominent display makers.

AMOLED is better for brightness and color saturation though.

I wouldn't characterize AMOLED as being better for saturation:

"...the enhanced color saturation is equally responsible for its wow factor...The colors are...not...gaudy like some existing OLED displays...Apple has taken the very good display on the iPad 2 and dramatically improved two of its major weak points: sharpness and color saturation – they are now state-of-the-art."

What constitutes a hi res display? Many Android tablets were already higher resolution (1280x800) than the previous iPads and 1080p devices were announced at CES. Is 720p high enough? 1080p? Are we talking about number of pixels or just pixel density. As a non Android example, Nokia has a 640x480 phone, but since the display is only 2.46" (it's a QWERTY candybar style phone, hence the smaller screen) the pixel density is 326 ppi. That's actually a "retina" display, even though the amount of pixels is relatively low.
