only a point-and-shoot! really, not all that much money! and, it's going to help me get great shots of my kids and all those other things, like large zeppelins and shooting stars that I come across all the time! not to mention the celebrities I see everyday on my way to work! and, ants, lots of ants with the macro setting! I'll carry it with me every day and never miss a shot.

come on, play along.

You mean, an iPhone 4S? Except for the macro setting. But how many ants do you want photos of really?

Would like to trade up from my Sony Alpha a550 to the a580, or maybe A77? You know, for the video capability.

Pentax Q? Since its introduction, the price has come down to a much more reasonable level. Users seem to like it very much. Image quality on par with other higher-end compacts but with extremely high build quality and arguably a much greater "fun factor."

(I don't have one, yet. Just got a K-5 so my camera budget needs time to recover)

And where are you seeing large Zeppelins??

I accidentally* bought a Canon SX230 HS awhile back as a pocket/utility camera. Now, over a third of the families from Baby Buzz's baseball team have 'em. Pretty good specs and great user ratings for a pocket travel zoom. Batteries are cheap; though some work much better than others, so you may have to eat $8-$10 of lousy life batteries to figure out which [generic] ones work best. Then, turn off the flash when not needed, and the GPS as well, to get better battery life-- maybe take a couple of "destination" shots w/ GPS on for the photo journal when you first take it out at a new location. It does pretty much everything you ask, but I said *accidentally, because I stumbled on to a killer deal... about $80 less than the $220 & up it seems to fetch now... not sure what your "not all that much money" range is. It's basically the same camera s-t recommended, only on steroids... bigger screen, longer zoom, etc. w/ same underpinnings.

Love the SX230. Great little camera. Picked up another one at Walmart last week for my wife. They had the display model clearanced for $90 with nothing but the camera. Picked up a genuine Canon charger and battery for $29 off of eBay and now it's good to go.

I didn't realize how good a sales job I evidently must've done, but every week it seems like another parent shows up w/ one at the kids' games. $90 is a freaking steal. Congrats on that. FWIW, I've found third party batteries for about $3-$4 each that significantly outperform the OEM Canon. The OEM charger is nicer looking, but no harm has come from using the $5 generic units. OTOH, I don't blame you for rounding out the OEM parts, for a more complete set. :-)

Lucky wife; I make Mrs. Buzz draw w/ crayons...

A lot of compact cameras cost the same as an entry level DSLR, or more.
