How is the final value fee calculated?

For most categories and selling formats, the final value fee is based on a percentage of the item's total cost to the buyer. The item's total cost to the buyer includes the item price and shipping cost plus any other costs to the buyer (less any sales tax). Any shipping discounts are not included in the final value fee calculation.

Auction-style listings: The final value fee is based on a percentage of the item's total cost to the buyer (less any sales tax). The maximum final value fee for auction-style listings is $100.00. For example, if you sell an item for $1,500.00 and charge $10.00 for shipping, you'll pay only $100.00, even though 9% of $1,510.00 is $135.90. We cut out dozens of cases on prototype Macs to accept the early Sony floppy drives. What did we know?

Word around hardware engineering was that Sony had to rush to put together an eject mechanism because their original drive used an eject button on the drive and of course Steve had to have it software controlled. They came up with an elegant miniature 3-stage planetary gearbox, beautifully machined, about as big as your thumbnail, with somewhere around 100:1reduction. It was elegant. I think the later drives used a nylon worm and sector, not nearly as cool.

Seemed like everybody had it in for those drives. One of the guys in software had a Twiggy in the aquarium in his office. Another guy used them for target practice with his .357. It was a hard lesson that cost Apple somewhere around $50 million, if I recall.

That's interesting, when did that come in? Here in the UK it is still only based on the final bid but is 10% not 9%.
