I'm talking objective and wide-ranging overall information about the US and world at large, not so-called "commentary" or "opinion" sites. Since the demise of real newspapers and the rise of the web and 24/7 cable "news", I think the quality of common US journalism outlets has plummeted (ABC, NBC, Fox, CNN, etc...they're all "news-lite" IMHO that have very limited news about what's actually happening in the world and way too much "fluff" or scandal about who said what about who this week. Here's my short list of decent sites. What are yours?

True institutional objectivity is a worthwhile and rare thing to find in news these days, I agree. For example, each of these sites are as editorially slanted and shaped (sometimes in a responsible way, sometimes irresponsible) to a promote a particular editorial point of view (your point of view, and taste, is revealed, by the choices listed here, and that's okay) either in a subtle way, or an overt way, as the other big networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, CNN, etc.

"Objective" news is elusive, and points of view are increasingly obvious. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Being editorially honest and upfront about the news organization's identity and mission--truth in advertising--serves the consumer better. More networks, and news organizations, should be transparent that way. The gesture at appearing neutral--wearing a false mask of objectivity (CNN, NBC, for example)--while systematically peddling a reliable partisan narrative, even in the hard news, has eroded credibility, and resulted in an epic loss of trust with readers and viewers.

In the best cases, the news side is fairly straight--or aims to be--while the opinion and analysis side is where the slant is on display. News consumers are more sophisticated than they used to be, and have a lot of choices. The abundance provides a mosaic of news sources. In the middle of the 20th century, the Cronkite era, objectivity was both a legal obligation and a prestige and trust building tradition. In those days, the broadcast bandwidth was very finite, and public property. Thus, the legal an moral obligation to be neutral. Now, with no lid on bandwidth, the variety is endless, and all points of view come to light.

Though traditionalists may find it an uneasy climate for news, on the good side, there's more quality journalism (and yes, more commentary and sports, and scandal, and trivia) than ever before, it's flourishing. The demise of newspapers is just a transformation. It's a lively time for news gathering and reporting.

That said, there are news organizations and websites that offer a respectable contrast, sharing space with different views, analysis, investigative pieces, and solid news.

If I could recommend only one site, it's this one:

It's strength is that it aggregates the best of long-form journalism. Lengthy articles, book reviews, et. And is inclined toward the literary and thoughtful, over the sizzle and fluff. It's edited in New Zealand, of all places. It was on the New Yorker's short list of news sites, several years ago, that's how I found it. I've had it bookmarked ever since.

Drudge is not even remotely close to what we're talking about here. He is very selective and slanted as to what he links to, much of which is highly unreliable and sensationalized fluff. He is a perfect example of exactly the type of trash I was talking about trying to avoid. It completely blows my mind that you could even make this suggestion.

aljazeera has a lot of world news that U.S. sites do not cover but a few of it's own reporters quit last year because of their blatant editorial bias against the U.S. I started reading timesofindia.indiatimes.com back in late 2001 to get more of an asian viewpoint but they expanded the entertainment scandal section so that it is little better than TheSun.

Well, it's always good to get yer mind blowed.

What you mean by 'objective' is 'liberal' or 'left'. Yes, Drudge selects stories from a conservative perspective, and yes he features too much (for my taste) tabloid sensationalism, but it's still a great page of news, including a lot of stories that the Lamestream Media ignores. And if you scroll down, you'll see Drudge links to every practically major news and opinion site in the world, from the AP to Financial Times, from The New Yorker to the Washington Examiner, from Eleanor Clift to Mark Steyn.

And, BTW, if you want careful analysis of world affairs with no obvious slant, check out Stratfor.com. It's a paid subscription service, but offers free weekly intelligence reports by email from George Friedman and other analysts.
